Music: 80's new wave (Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure, The Smiths, The Smithereens, INXS, The Cult, The Clash, New Order, Violent Femmes), vocal jazz (Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Louie Armstrong and Dean Martin), Brazilian/latin music and artists like Claudia Acuna, some classic rock, some classical (Tchaikovsky, Beethoven), some stuff I would classify as "alternative" (Barenaked Ladies, The Black Crowes, The Charlatans UK, Cowboy Mouth, Inspiral Carpets, Jane's Addition, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Soul Asylum, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, They Might Be Giants, The White Stripes). Now that I look at this "alternative" list, I realize many of these bands were OHWs (or a few hit wonders), but I still like them and listen to the music.
TV Shows: Current favorites (Law & Order, ER, Project Runway, Little People Big World, Ugly Betty, Burn Notice, Damages, Mad Men, House) and cancelled favorites (The 4400, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Voyager). I recently watched "In Treatment" on HBO and thought it was fascinating both in the approach to the directing and in the subject matter, even if the ending was a bit too cut and dried for me. I just finished "John Adams" - what a great political/legal/historical drama! I also have seven episodes of "Breaking Bad" to watch, I like the filming style and the nature of the mystery, so I'll probably finish that one too. I've also starting watching a lot of OTV (OvationTV), which I love because they highlight different parts of the art world each night of the week - art, film, music, people and performance.
Movies: Cinema Paradiso (1988 original version)-a layered and beautiful film; Lord of the Rings trilogy; Blue/White/Red trilogy directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski; O' Brother, Where Art Thou?; The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover; American Beauty; The Red Violin; plus really enjoy Sophia Coppola's work (The Virgin Suicides) and dark comedies like Harold and Maude, Grosse Pointe Blank, American Splendor. There are many others; I will have to post them as they come to mind.
Books: The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, poems of Robert Frost, Edgar Allen Poe stories/poems, The Count of Monte Cristo, the Mysterious Island, Miracle at Philadelphia (a wonderful account of the negotiation of the Constitution and struggles that led to our current form of government). More recently I have been trying to finish Margaret Thatcher's autobiography, as well as a biography of George Washington that I picked up called "His Excellency". I don't read that many business books, but got through "Good to Great" as part of a book club not long ago - really fascinating study on how really great companies got and stayed that way. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on their leaders, as I wasn't expecting the results they found. Also currently reading "Catch-22", "Ivanhoe", and "Criminal Critique of Reason," which is a historical mystery with Immanuel Kant as the sleuth.
Quotes: "too many seekers, too few beacons"
More About Me: I do not practice law (sorry if that disappoints you). I am highly analytical and rational, and yet a realist (sometimes an optimist) at the same time. I am a conservative because I believe strongly in personal responsibility. I am independent, yet generous with my love and affection for those I care about and those who have had a difficult time in life. I am an explorer and ambitious, always looking for the next challenge to my mind, body and spirit.
