We all love different stand up comedians for different reasons. Some are renowned for being crude, like Sam Kinison, and Eddie Murphy, others for their lack of crudeness, like Bill Cosby and Gallagher. Some are political, like Lewis Black, and Jon Stewart (stand up before the Daily show). Variety comics like The Amazing Jonathan and Jeff Dunham have carved succesfull nitches for themselves.

Who are your favorite comedians, and what is it about them that makes them your favorite?

Who is the best stand up comic ever?
George Carlin?
Robin Williams?
Dana Carvey?

Who?

This is a brilliant thread. I would say a lesser known comic named Doug Stanhope is my current favorite.

YouTube - Doug Stanhope - You're Taking the Wrong Drugs

Notice, I don't agree with all his views but he is funny.

Oh wait, the video is controversial. His comedy is rather blue. So, don't open the link up at work.

Dude, that was hillarious.
Not for the faint of heart though, people with a need for "safe" humor probably won't like it. better stick to Jeff Dunham and Gallagher. lol

Check out "Dana Carvey guitar Humor"

"Lewis Black, Hanukkah Sucks" is another one of my favorites on you tube. Bitter, angry, hilarious.

If that's not enough, try "old testament" by Lewis Black. good grief, I love this guy.

Hard to say. My favorite as of late was Dave Chappelle, until he starting having issues with Comedy Central.

I think we all know who you are referring to Well_Spoken_Man

Another comedian I like is Adam Carolla, he used to be have his own show with Jimmy Kimmel called the Man Show. He also had a radio show, but that didn't last. Now you can hear him along with a whole host of notable figures and the Adam Carolla podcast:

The Adam Carolla Podcast

Note again, he is rather blue and I don't agree with all of his views but still darn funny!

In terms of old school comedy, the oldest I go is Eddie Murphy. I love Eddie Murphy. George Carlin and Richard Pryor were geniuses of course, but I always felt they took themselves too seriously. Like they felt comedy was a mechanism for social change, that's too ideal, political and serious for me.

Eddie Murphy was funny for me because his stuff was revolutionary, observational, absurd yet completely in good fun. That's what I like. I like comedians who have something say, say it, but know it's just in good fun.

The funniest stand up show I've ever seen was Buddy Hackett. It was on HBO or Showtime back in the late '80's / early '90's and it was the funniest show I'd ever seen. I have never had my sides ache from laughing either before or since.

I find the comedy of Demetri Martin to be pretty funny. He has a weird take on things that appeals to my warped sense of humor.
