I don't know if this has already appeared on another thread:

This week, coinciding with a visit by Gov. Palin and her 14-year old daughter to NYC this week, David Letterman made some jokes at the expense of the Palin family. One characterized Gov. Palin as looking like a "s!utty flight attendant" due to her makeup applications. Another suggested that Gov. Palin's daughter (he didn't specify which one) should avoid sitting near Eliot Spritzer at the Yankees game, lest he decide to make a move on her. A third joke suggested that one of the governor's daughters was "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez.

Predictably, there has been sparring between Letterman and the Palin family. The Palins feel he should apologize to all women for making jokes about statutory r.a.p.e (assuming Letterman's jokes were aimed at 14 year-old Willow Palin). Letterman responded that he was referring to 18 year-old Bristol Palin, and that he would never make light of statutory r.a.p.e.

What are everyone's thoughts on this situation?

Letterman is just a liberal minded coward taking pot shots at a conservative under the guise of "comedy". I'm glad that conservatives are usually classier than that, but the double standard is sometimes hard to deal with. I mean, can you imagine the outcry if anyone, under any circumstances, made a despicable crack like that about Mr. Obama's daughter?

Letterman should apologize. His remarks were on purpose, wildly out of line and degrading to all women, particularly young women/minors. What do you suppose the mainstream media and women's groups would say if similar remarks were made about the Obama's daughters? Children of politicians should be left alone, regardless of their age and no matter what side of the political aisle their parent serves.

The left has no rules for their own behaviour, this thread is quiet precisely because it was Palin and her child that were insulted, had it been Obama and his children this thread would have been shut down by now, double standards reveal alot about a person's integrity or lack thereof

Which "person's" integrity are you referring to?

Obama and his children do seem to be treated better by the media than past high-visibility public figures. We can discuss why, I'd be interested to know myself. Is it because they're black? Is it because they're Democrats? Is it because they just don't have as much family drama going on as the Palins do? Maybe it's a combination of all three.

Letterman admitted that his jokes were in bad taste. His only defensive posture is that his sexual jokes were aimed at legally-aged Bristol, not underaged Willow. I certainly believe children should be off-limits.

it's because their father is popular among the mudslingers and political hatchet men...his race factors in to the degree that P.C factors in...which of course is everything...Letterman is a useless entertainer and a symptom of our misplaced priorities as a nation,as such he has one goal.....publicity..and since the jokes are written for them this was figured in as well.

I think that the comments were insanely stupid & not funny at all. I don't think that his show is ever funny.

I haven't watched his show much in years but I do know that his TOP 10 is often pretty racy. I am not sure if he is equally inappropriate to people on all sides of the political fence. That would take some research.

I do believe that he was taking a shot at the 18 year old. She has shots taken at her all of the time & I do believe that it was more of the same.

As far as the Obama children, I think that their age is truly the thing that keeps them off-limits.

I do think that children should be off limits.

It's all about publicity on both sides. It was timed with Conan taking the reigns of The Tonight Show. It worked since Letterman got higher ratings than Conan. Plus a publicized "feud" between Letterman and the Palin family keeps her in the public radar in a noble cause. It gets her points for any future elections.

I'll bet there will be another of Letterman's shows where he invites her on to apologize and explain what his writers were thinking. It'll be another publicity stunt to boost his ratings again since people will tune in to see what happens. And again it will keep her in the public consciousness. It's show business and entertainment. The writers plan these things in meetings and discuss the consequences to everything that goes into a show. They knew exactly what they were doing, and probably got permission from the Palin camp. Blame all the reality cr@p shows out there. People want stupid feuds and here is one to keep them satisfied. Don't believe a word of it.

It's a double-standard all the way around. Everyone hates jokes about their person, but loves jokes about the other.

Come on folks, let's take it for what it really is: a simple mistake on the Letterman's team part about which Palin daughter was at the game, resulting in a couple of bad jokes (moreso because it just wasn't that creative).

This is not some "liberal vs. conservative" kind of thing. The late night comedians take equal shots at everyone. Look at how many Joe Biden jokes there are. And, if you will recall, there were a plethora of jokes about Chelsea Clinton's then awkward looks.

And let's be honest: Who is the first person you think of when they say Sara Palin's daughter? Of course it's Bristol. How many of you would have known it was Willow Palin at the Yankee game if the Palin's didn't come out and say it? If you are truly being honest, I'm sure nobody did. I know I didn't.

OCG,

I didn't think Letterman was referring to Willow; Bristol was the one getting the press. I'd forgotten all about Willow until the Palins brought it up, as you mentioned. Letterman will definitely sink to unmentional depths for a laugh (by the way, his ratings were sky-high that week), but I just don't seem him -- or many other talk-show hosts -- going as low as to tell any jokes implying statutory rape.
