It's a double-standard all the way around. Everyone hates jokes about their person, but loves jokes about the other.

Come on folks, let's take it for what it really is: a simple mistake on the Letterman's team part about which Palin daughter was at the game, resulting in a couple of bad jokes (moreso because it just wasn't that creative).

This is not some "liberal vs. conservative" kind of thing. The late night comedians take equal shots at everyone. Look at how many Joe Biden jokes there are. And, if you will recall, there were a plethora of jokes about Chelsea Clinton's then awkward looks.

And let's be honest: Who is the first person you think of when they say Sara Palin's daughter? Of course it's Bristol. How many of you would have known it was Willow Palin at the Yankee game if the Palin's didn't come out and say it? If you are truly being honest, I'm sure nobody did. I know I didn't.

Have you heard any Michelle jokes or jokes about Obama's daughters ?

No controversial jokes about Michelle yet, aside from the New York Post caricature that caused a stir. But if Michelle Obama was chosen as a VP candidate and seen as responsible for derailing a presidential campaign, and committed some of the personal and political miscues Palin committed, there would definitely have been some jokes about her. As for the kids, they're still very young, some of the youngest White House children in a very long time. I don't think the comedians would go after children that young, regardless of race or political affiliation.

I think Oregon Coast Guy is right in his post, but it is also true that we haven't heard Michelle jokes. Letterman did tell a couple at the beginning of January about Michelle's mother moving in with the Obamas at the White House, and so did Leno. But you're right; we haven't heard those sorts of jokes since. The little Obama girls are too young and should be off limits - we haven't heard jokes about the littlest Palin girl, either; and we shouldn't. But come to think of it, I don't think Letterman did many Laura Bush jokes, either. That may simply be a function of the fact that both first ladies are/were popular and unelected, so they haven't been targets.

Sarah Palin had a teenage daughter who got preganant,by today's moral standards that's the equivalent of a hangnail...John McCain ruined his own campaign by being about as effective as cold toast...Sarah Palin has done nothing to deserve the treatment she has received

It's all about publicity on both sides. It was timed with Conan taking the reigns of The Tonight Show. It worked since Letterman got higher ratings than Conan. Plus a publicized "feud" between Letterman and the Palin family keeps her in the public radar in a noble cause. It gets her points for any future elections.

I'll bet there will be another of Letterman's shows where he invites her on to apologize and explain what his writers were thinking. It'll be another publicity stunt to boost his ratings again since people will tune in to see what happens. And again it will keep her in the public consciousness. It's show business and entertainment. The writers plan these things in meetings and discuss the consequences to everything that goes into a show. They knew exactly what they were doing, and probably got permission from the Palin camp. Blame all the reality cr@p shows out there. People want stupid feuds and here is one to keep them satisfied. Don't believe a word of it.
That very well could be for publicity.

I would say the same for Carrie Prejean. It is very disengenuous for conservative hosts to say how wronged she was. She wanted bigger & better things than Miss America could ever provide for her. She embraced the publicity. She ate it up. She wants to be a star & is using the situation to her advantage.

I am not knocking her for making her play. It might work. We'll see. I just laugh at the outrage because the whole thing unfolded as she was hoping it would.

The claim that Letterman made a slip-up could be bought, if the notation wasn't listed as 'and her daughter, Willow' will be attending the game ...

In either case ... If anyone had said that about either of my sisters, one above 18 and one not, they had better begin groveling and not stop for quite some time.

Letterman should have left the Palin family alone, I'll agree with that. I also believe Palin was unfairly treated by the McCain campaign. She wasn't qualified to be VP to begin with, but I don't know many people who would turn down a chance to be VP regardless of their experience or lack thereof.

In one of the talk show discussions concerning this, it was stated that Letterman has made more jokes about Sarah Palin & her family than all of the other late night comedians put together. Sorry I can't remember which show I was watching.

I haven't seen where anyone has counted that, but it may or may not be true. Letterman has indeed made a lot of jokes at her expense. Others have certainly taken their shots, though; and in fact Leno told a similar joke with no reaction from the Palin family.
Letterman has now issued a full apology - in addition to his remarks of the other night. It might look more classy and gracious for the governor to accept the apology at this point; rather than to keep this feud going.

As for there not being jokes about the Obama's, the fact is that other than the inaguration flub and the time he said he had visited 57 states (which he said in a speech here in Oregon) he hasn't really said or done anything in which you could write a good joke about. Sure, you could joke that he has big ears, but that's good for maybe 2 jokes, then gets old.

In fact, some jokes revolve around the fact that the Obama's haven't done anything deserving of a joke. I mean, how many of you have good Obama jokes?
