Just watched the first season (7 episodes) of "Southland." I've seen many cop shows; my favorite is "The Shield." Anyone who has seen Southland, what is your take on it?

Hello, tbesq!

I've watched a few episodes of Southland. It's a little quirky, but I have liked what I've seen. I watched some of the season ender - interesting. I'll have to go back and watch the whole season to really get a good feel of it.

Oh, I couldn't watch The Shield - far too much cursing for me. Gratuitous violence doesn't bother me at all, but excessive cursing is just more than I can take!!

Jacquiem,

Thanks for your input. Yes, Southland is a bit quirky, but I like that it's character-driven and seems to give a different perspective on law enforcement than most shows. Most shows only develop one or two characters; here, we have a bead on all of them. I'm thinking the second season will get away from that somewhat, but we'll see.

The Shield definitely revels in gratuitous violence and other "adult content," but we're dealing with a precinct that operates with the worst offenders. You can't catch these criminals acting like Opie, lol. Haven't watched the final season yet, but it should be interesting.

I'm in love with "Southland". The camera angles made me a little sick at first, but they add something. The "Jamilla" character was so fresh and different. I loved that she was not the "Hollywood" version of the teenage black female. The last episode was too much to take in. I'm hooked
