Has anyone else seen this wonderful show?

I am a sci-fi fan and can't believe I let this one slip under the radar. Just bought the box set on DVD and it is great - compelling plot, interesting characters, cracking score, very emotive stuff. It is by far my favourite TV series. And it has Summer Glau in it of course!

My favorite character is Jayne and so far my favourite episode is "Out of Gas" where Mal has to rebuild the ship and has all those flashbacks.

I too didn't see it while it was on the air, but thankfully had friends who shoved the DVD set into my hands with instructions to watch it as soon as humanly possible.

Be sure you hunt down the movie "Serenity" which was made based on the TV series. Absolutely fantastic movie. I've had friends who happened to go see it while it was in the theatres, then come back and recommend it to me not realizing that it was based on "Firefly".

It's a big plot with many sub plots - It's like a western in space, set hundreds of years in the future. A ship of smugglers, led by Captain Reynolds take on any and all jobs, legal and illegal to earn a crust and keep "Serenity", his ship, in the air. There are 9 of them on the crew including a preacher, a mercenary and a "Companion"! The character development is second to none though and it is very well casted.

They are also running from the "Alliance", who are like a new Universal government and the show has a lot of action, but dark humour too.

I love this show. Currently (re)watching it on DVD.

It's set a few years after a civil war in which the big-government Alliance defeated the independent free-staters. Scarred by his experiences and having fought on the losing side, Mal Reynolds can't bring himself to live under the Alliance's stifling rule. Accompanied by Zoe, his second-in-command, he heads for the frontiers of human space, seeking some measure of freedom. Through chance and misadventure, he collects a motley crew and together they eke out an existence on the edge (and beyond) of the law as well as civilization.

The characters are all well-drawn and well-acted, with their own personalities and agendas that generate wonderful interactions (not to mention conflicts). And, thankfully, there are no aliens and no cutesy robots. It's all just regular human people (with the possible exception of River, who displays hints of mild ESP). I highly recommend it.

YES, I'm a HUGE fan. I just pre-ordered an awesome poster from Quantum Mechanix. Don't forget that the Serenity Collector's Edition is out too!

Out of Gas is one of my favorite episodes too. But I think my absolute favorite is the last one "Objects in Space", it's just so thought provoking to me.

I was really surprised anyone had it mentioned here, this is my first foray into the 'off topic' world

Has anyone seen Cowboy Bebop? It's an anime series that's supposed to be very similar to Firefly. I've had it in my blockbuster queue for a while but it's listed as 'very long wait' which in the past has generally meant I won't see it for at least 3 months!

Great show - especially on DVD (which has the episodes in the correct order, not as they mistakenly appeared on TV). Watch the Firefly DVD first, then Serenity (the movie).

By the way, the new Battlestar Galactica is even better than Firefly/Serenity.

Hey, great topic! Firefly was one of the best shows on TV that hardly anyone got to see. I only heard about it through a friend who loaned me the show DVDs. I was hooked within the first 10 minutes. The writing is amazing, the acting is equally so, and the story is very, very interesting and fun.

The episode "The Message" made me weep. I still can't watch that epi or hear the music without getting teary.

Most TV is junk. This is one of the few shows that I have actually enjoyed over the last few years.
