Has anyone been? Any advice for the novice overseas traveler? Egypt is top on my list, but Spain and Italy are close behind. My only overseas visits thus far are Mexico and Canada, so this will be really different and hopefully fun.

Egypt is a great choice! However, Spain and Italy are also good choices. I'd suggest that you go to a bookstore when you have some time and look through one good travel book for each location (Lonely Planet and Frommers guides are good). If you've got time (and money), why not all three?! I love seeing three countries per trip, if possible.

Egypt: one of the best travel experiences I've had so far. Imagine... all of those fantastic, surreal imagines you've seen on TV and have read and dreamed about since childhood are right there for you to see (and touch!). Most people speak some English (or French) so you don't have to learn Arabic (but may want to learn niceties). Stay with tour guides/hosts. Do NOT drink Egyptian water! Organized travel recommended, especially for solo traveller and is quite cheap. Use a travel agent (domestic or reputable one in host country - I used a really good one based in Turkey called Seven Wonders travel or something. They organized my fantastic trip through Greece, Turkey and Egypt.). Must dos - sightseeing around Cairo (almost no traffic lights in town and cars squeeze in any available space - quite a spectacle to behold), Giza Pyramids and camel rides, Memphis, Nile cruise to/from Aswan, and fly/cruise/bus to see temples in Abu Simbel (don't miss this one!). I didn't get a chance to but want to do - take a desert caravan, see Alexandria and coast, and visit Sinai peninsula.

Spain: incredible mix of cultures, architecture and some of the world's most incredibly beautiful people (especially Spanish women). Some locals not that tourist-friendly so bring a phrasebook if you need to speak Spanish to get around (some folks won't "understand" you until you first try to speak some Spanish). More expensive than Egypt but you can save money by independent travel and you can drink the water. Decide what you want to do - party (Ibiza and islands), or see cities, culture, flamenco, and bullfighting (Barcelona, Seville, Madrid and Grenada for the Al Hambra Palace), the Basque country in the north (running of bulls), or some other combination. I loved Barcelona, Seville, Grenada and Madrid and would love to see the rest.

Italy: as good as the hype with sights, sounds, great food and entertainment oozing from every street corner. Lots to see and do so check a travel book to plan your trip route. Italy is the most expensive of your three country choices but, again, you can go independent here to save money. You can drink the water. I recommend learning some Italian (get a phrasebook) as some folks did not seem to speak or understand English until you try to speak a few words in Italian. I saw Milan (fashion and great shopping), Venice (as romantic and cool as you'd imagine with great nearby beaches), Florence (incredible walking town, friendly folks, great everything, best market shopping and some cheap/free eats), Rome (many greats - Vatican, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, etc.., great shops and more famous piazzas and fountains than you will be able to remember). Did not see but would love to see - Bologna, Pisa, Amalfi coast, Corfu (party island), Naples (birthplace of pizza, Pompeii and other historical and architectural wonders), Sicily, etc...

Hope some of my info is helpful. Best travel wishes, wherever they take you.

Regards,
Alexandra

Follow-up note: Hmm, I separated the above-reviews by paragraph for each country but the site auto-squished it all together in one, big, run-on mega-paragraph. Good luck!
