I would suggest to those teachers who want to travel but can't to look at teaching at university where much travel is undertaken at the universities expense. This does mean having to undertake considerable research so you would need to reflect on that.

Wow. That was informative.

I'm a primary school teacher (elementary) in London. Teacher terms, conditions, qualifications and pay scales are set nationally for all of us. We get an extra allowance for London and a couple of other big cities in order to retain teachers where housing costs are much higher. We get paid for 5 to 6 weeks of summer holiday because our salary is paid in 1/12ths.

I'm a class based teacher and generally work 8.30 to 5.30 (teaching 8.55 to 3.30), lunch is an hour but obviously half of this goes in setting up for the afternoon's lessons. I teach every subject within the set national curriculum (everything from english & maths & science to art & history & religion & geography) so the depth isn't necessarily huge for 9 and 10 year olds but the breadth of my job is pretty big. Also, teaching in primary I am responsible for the pastoral care of my students. For the last couple of years all UK teachers get 10% (one morning OR afternoon) of non teaching time for planning and preparation.

I've worked in other fields, came to teaching in my early 30s. Compared to other professional jobs I've had within universities, it is very demanding and I'm often left exhausted at the end of the day. Parent's aren't pleased when the summer vacation is over for nothing! I do like it though and I feel I'm appropriately paid.

Holidays are, of course, set and it is more expensive to travel during school breaks but that's the way it is. We do get more holiday than other professions and that's some of our pay back I guess.

I think one of the things we do have in common in both educational systems that the best career path options take you out of class. Either into small advisory / support roles or into management. It's a shame.

Anyway thanks for sharing. I'm interested in working in the states so I'll have to really study the differing packages and expectations from state to state....... and then head for New York! The cup cakes in Sugar Sweet Sunshine in the lower east side would just be a bonus.

Well, I'm a teacher and I have traveled quite a bit for my age. I love doing and started young. If you really love to travel you find the time and money to do it. It's easy to find cheap ways to travel. Others also mentioned the summer vacations and such, which is a great time to travel. Although, during the school year I have to admit I don't go too far...I work on average 9 hour days, 7-4. However I've been known to put in 10 hour days. Someone mentioned teacher are home at 3:30. My contract hours are 7:30-4 and the students are in school from 7:55-3:15. (This is a public school)

I work with a great many teachers, and many that I know don't travel not because they don't have the time but rather because they don't have the many. Teachers salaries around here are quite low but are improving. (Or at least, was before this economy mess. There had been a plan passed to raise teacher salaries by 3% every year for the next five years.) Anyway, these teaches when they can afford to travel often do so in the summer months or during the Christmas holidays. They take many short get aways on the weekend, leaving early on Friday and arriving home Sunday night. I would think a teacher would be an excellent travel companion, as many other jobs people only get off paid two weeks per year.

Well "Stevethetraveller"....its a shame you couldn't make it happen with a teacher...your loss!!!! No other career that I know of, in the U.S., has 2 months off to travel!!!!!!!! YOU MUST BE CRAZY!! Teachers that don't travel must be crazy!!!!!!!!! I can almost guarantee you will not find a woman in another profession who has that kind of free time to travel. I am a teacher and I spend all summer globe-trotting and LOVE IT!!!

It really has nothing to do with a certain profession...it has everything to do with people who make travel a priority. Too bad you axed "Teachers" from your matches. You find the right one and even if she never has traveled, with a motivated traveling companion (theoretically YOU), she would definitely have the time to do it...and a lot of it. Again...your loss!!
