Hey there-

I'm going to New Zealand to visit my cousin and see a new corner of the world.

I'll just be poking around the south island this trip and I'd love to hear any places you visited there that you would either recommend or avoid.

Also any advice on backpacker lodging, hotels or camping.

Thoughts? Thanks!

I've been to New Zealand four years ago to meet someone that met me online. I visited the Northern section around Auckland and Buckland Beach. Buckland Beach is a beautiful place to visit. On the day I arrived there, my acquaintence and I watched the sailboat race from our balcony.

I spent 2 Months in New Zealand last year. The south Island rocks. I loved Nelson / kayaking in the abel tasman. Swimming with Dolphins in Kaikoura was fantastic, but go early (I think it was 5:30 in the morning). Mt. Cook and Mueller hut were also highlights. Plenty to do for the thrill seeker: bungee jumping, skydiving, canyoning (I'd recommend it). Plenty of hiking to be found. You'll have a great time.

I blogged about my experience http://dansnznew.blogspot.com/

Gosh, I love travel! And, I loved travel in New Zealand! There are some great tour companies that traverse the North and South Islands (and both) and some include your lodging at a hostel or backpacker place at incredibly low prices. I saw both islands with an outfit called Magic Bus Network which was extremely safe, reliable, flexible (you can hop-off and on) and it was a whole lot of fun. Website for further research: http://www.magicbus.co.nz/ . The Magic drivers were friendly, interesting, and sometimes act as your tour guides. Fellow-travelers were international, of differing ages and status, some were party-heads, others were nature lovers and still others honeymooned, etc... Delightful people, those Kiwis, too, and the Maori culture and geological wonders on North Island are unspeakably fabulous to behold. The natural and geological wonders on the South Island will blow your mind, too. I don't have to know you at all to say, with confidence, that you will LOVE New Zealand... Look forward to your NZ travelogue.

Recently went over there and had a wonderful time. I was mainly in Auckland but also went on a guided tour down to Rotorua where the Thermal Pools are. On the trip down we went through the gorgeous Waikato countryside. Waitomo Glowworm Caves were stunning and I got to see Kiwis (The Bird that is)

I would have liked to have seen more but I was only over there for a week. I'll definatly be going back there.

In fact I could easily live there. Wish I met somebody over there so I'd have a reason to stay.
