Has anyone been to New Orleans, post Katrina?

I'm going there on Friday for a week to attend a professional education conference and wondered if anyone has any suggestions on places to go to eat or to see nearby.

Thank in advance!

Hey 1 tall woman...I live here. Where are you staying? if you are staying near the french Quarter you must eat some beigneits, it is light powdered doughnuts and eat at Mother's..they have great sandwiches..po-boys. You really should walk by the St. Louis Cathedral..and if you can do a carriage ride, it si a cool history of the city.

The French Quarter seems to be safe. Stay around St. Louis cathedral and down to the French Market and you should be o.k. There is a must see store on Decatur called The Artist's Market. A girlfriend and i were just there last weekend and oohing and aahing.

The restaurants again in the French Quarter are great. Paul K's restaurant, Draggo's in Metairie for Grilled Oysters....to die for along with anything else there.

The aquarium is near the French Quarter too and was always fun. I don't know if the Riverwalk is in operation but that was also good. Stay away from NewOrleans east....you can see why if you even drive the interstate out there.

Have fun and stay safe!

Im orig from New Orleans....

Other than the obvious hotspots like the French Quater.....Ask a cab driver about the Cameilla Grill....Its amazing lunch time food served 50's style....but again AMAZING food...

also, Im not sure if Jaegers is till open post Katrina, but its located at 'the point in lakeview' which is by far the best seafood in NO....

Stay uptown NO and you'll feel the European vibe.....downtown is cool but Uptown near Tulane and Loyola is the TRUE NO

I've been several times in the last few years. The French Quarter is fine, as is much areas around it like the Warehouse District. I usually stay at the Ambassador that is just outside the quarter, though the word must be out, it's rates have slowly creeped back up. There are quite a few great used bookstores, including Kitcken Witch that has a lot of used/new cookbooks.

Darn this EH thingy...never got any notifications of people responding to my post.

I had a great time in New Orleans and would LOVE to go back! I tried one of the po-boys, had some crawfish, but dang it - - - never made it to try a beigneit!

I took some beautiful exterior photos of St. Louis Cathedral and the French Quarter. I'm still getting over the last remaining remnants of my blisters with all the walking I did...hehe

I visited the Oak Alley plantation while I was there...amazing!...which, by the way - Nicolas Cage was there the day I was! Walked right past him and didn't even realize it...DOH!

Then at our convention hotel, he was staying there too! He was filming a new movie on the top floor!!! Saawwweeet!

Glad you had a great time. I was there for the first time in December and was enchanté. Can't wait to go back again. But tell me, how could you have NOT had a beignet? You can't escape 'em.

They say Nicholas Cage bought the "haunted" LaLaurie mansion...I wonder why he would stay at a hotel if this was true. Hmm...
