The post above me is almost perfect.

I would also make sure to stop at El Capitan State Beach. It is the most phenomenally gorgeous spot in that its forested and coastal. You have the best of both worlds in one small spot. I highly recommend it. Also, I would get a state park day use parking pass. You can park daily for one fee for a year. If you plan to make a lot of stops it is well worth it. The cost varies: I have paid as little as $35.00 and as much as $120.00. I suspect that it will be more this year due to the state of the state.

I would also take the 101 out of L.A. not the 5 or the 1. The 5 is overrun with big rigs and 1 is most consistently scenic north of Santa Barbara.

I'm sure you have already taken this trip, but maybe my post will help someone else.
