I'm planning a trip to the Rockies for the first time ever this fall. My tentative plan is to land in Denver, exploring the city, then rent a car and hit the road, maybe to visit Yellowstone.

For those who've visited or lives in that region, what are some can't miss destinations for me to check out?

I love Wyoming! So spacious and empty; looking out over the hills, one can almost envision a buffalo hunt hundreds of years ago, with millions of buffalo on the charge.

There are buffalo up in Yellowstone; you'll see them along the roads. Lots of wildlife, everywhere.

If I had time, I'd drive south from Yellowstone down to Jackson. It's beautiful down that way, and you can see the Grand Tetons. Very impressive! There is even some open range down by Jackson...

West of Denver, if you're not scared of the steep grades...Leadville is up so high, over 10,000 feet...some people get headaches up that high, but it's very historic.

Denver has some excellent museums, too, if you like that. Art, history, nature...

I'm sure you're going to have a grand time.

Thanks for the info! Jackson sounds like fun, I'll have to see what might be the best way to loop around the region so I get the most out of the trip.

A lot depends on whether you've visited that part of the "West" before and how large a radius you feel you can drive from Denver. And whether driving south rather than north is an option.

If you’ve never seen the Grand Canyon, that would by my No. 1 recommendation. Yellowstone, Jackson, and the Tetons are also great. In southern Utah, Zion and Bryce national parks are spectacular. In Colorado there’s the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and the Royal Gorge just a little south of that. Dynosaur Nat’l Monument in NW Colorado.

Also in Southern Utah there’s Lake Powell behind the Glen Canyon dam where you can take tour boats back into some really spectacular canyon wall scenery. Try Googling that to see examples.

These are just some ideas over a wide area. There are a lot more to recommend once you pick a main focus and narrow down your radius for travel.

Best part...Jackson Hole is only two hours south of Yellowstone. The Grand Tetons...even more impressive than the Rockies. I hope you manage it.

BTW, I thought the saying was...Don't get between a man and his dog? Or a man and his anything?

You know what they say down in Texas...I wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as quick as I could! Did you happen to make it down to Texas Hill Country at all?

I guess you can tell I've been to your blog.

I went when I was 13. I went to Steamboat Springs and a few other places but I am hazy on the names. I did get to see a moose, long horn sheep, and lots of elk. I went in July and there was snow on the top of the mountain! It was crazy.

I went to college in Colorado, Colorado College in Colorado Springs. I really wonder how long of a trip you are taking, and how far you are willing to go from Denver. I am not that crazy about the city of Denver myself, but I love Colorado Springs, and Manitoux Springs, and if you're looking for nature, then I would say check out Garden of the Gods. It's absolutely beautiful, and doable in a day trip from Denver. I love the mountains in Colorado. If you're into gambling, I say take a drive up to Cripple Creek. The scenic drive is great, and you can spend a few hours there. Any of the small ski resorts are cool, even in the summer/fall. There is so much to do in Colorado. I'm trying to think of a place that my friend said she used to go every year, but I can't think of it. But whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have fun.
