What has been your best travel experience so far? Where did you go? What did you do? Why was it so great? Do you plan to go back?

What has been your worst travel experience (place or general experience)? Where was it? Why was it so bad?

We were in the middle of a kitchen remodel, doing all the work ourselves...a complete gut job.

Right in the middle of it all, my husband suggested we cruise the Society Islands. I thought...Are you crazy? We're in the middle of a kitchen remodel!

And then I thought...What better time?

So off we went. We booked on the Paul Gauguin, a small ship, 300 passengers. Very casual. It cruises the Society Islands as well as the Marquesas.

Every day was gorgeous. But the most memorable was the day I learned to swim in the lagoon at Bora Bora. I could swim a little, but I'd always used a vest.

That day I got good and comfortable with it. I didn't use a vest; I swam way far out, way over my head. We snorkeled the whole day long. The lagoon is beautiful, and the day was truly extraordinary.

We stayed a week on Tahiti after the cruise. We rented a car so small, we had to cram ourselves in there with a shoehorn. But it did have AC.

Tahiti only had one stoplight on the whole island, in Papeete, the capital. All the other intersections are roundabouts.

In the hotels they speak English. Outside the tourist areas, French and Tahitian...me, nada! But by the end of that week, I could stumble my way through a menu, enough to know whether I was ordering boeuf, veau, pollo, poissons. I could even make out some of the ingredients.

So that was my best vacation ever...and it explains the avatar I use here. What made it so special is that it was a spur of the moment vacation right in the middle of the biggest remodeling job I have ever done. Now, who couldn't love a man like that?

One of the best and one of the worst were the same trip!

3 weeks rafting on the Colorado through the grand canyon. Wow. It was a private trip with a bunch of friends ... we had waited for the permit for several years. Beautiful! Exciting! Soul-enhancing!

OTOH ... one of the food boats flipped early on and a lot of the food got ruined. No problem; we had lots of extra food ... but people reverted to the Savage! Were stealing food from each others' boats during the night. Just weird.

And, I hurt my back and still have pain in it, 20 years later.

And, the transmission on my truck went out on the way back and had to rent a truck and tow it home.

And, when I got home, a pipe had broken during my absence and the house was flooded ... had to replace most of the flooring.

Come to think of it, overall? it was not one of my best trips. LOL!

Worst vacation? Hong Kong, we arrived about 24 hours in advance of a typhoon (hurricaine). We were safe, but it was kind of scary watching the TV coverage of the storm & not being able to understand a word of what was being said.

Best? That is a harder decision, but I think it might actually be a staycation last year. My adult daughter & I stayed in a B&B here on Oahu & just played tourist. We had an absolutely wonderful time. I would do it again in a heart beat.

I also had a best vacation/worst vacation experience while rafting through the Grand Canyon. It was a one day rafting trip, we got helicoptered out. The rafting & the helicopter were great. Not so great was when our bus had a broken hose to the radiator & we got stuck in the desert, as the sun was going down. It was a long story, but obviously we did make it out OK.
