Whether you are driving or flying, travel can be a stressful task. Did I pack everything? Will I get there on time? Do I have everything?

Here are a few to start:
Make sure your grandmother doesn't bring her knitting scissors to the airport! Also make sure she doesn't bring her back up pair too

If you take sample shampoos for your first day or so, you can by a bigger bottle later and then throw it out before your trip back home.

What tips do you have to share?

My tips:

Before you leave make a "Travel To Do List", and list everything you need to pack, bring as a carry on, tasks you need to do before you leave (e.g. pay bills), and then use the list to cross things off. That way you will not forget something in a rush.

Always pack a few zip lock bags, and a trash bag. They do come in handy.

Make copies of itinerary, passports and any other documentation and put it in your luggage as well as emergency contact and insurance info.

Keep a change of clean underwear in your carry on in case luggage gets delayed or lost.

If going overseas make sure all your credit card companies are aware of where you are going and how long. Otherwise credit card will get a fraud hold put on it the first time you use it, and you will have to call them to clear it.

If you want to use an iPhone or iPad overseas call AT&T and signup for a months worth of data plan for the country you are going to. Otherwise data roaming will cost thousands.

If you like Equal etc., pack your own and bring it with you. It is not available in every country overseas. Ditto for hot sauce .

Make sure you have heartburn, and anti-diarrhea medicine in carry on just in case.

It is cheaper to take cash out of an ATM overseas than to use a money exchange service.

Get a credit card that does not charge an overseas transaction fee.

If carrying valuables in luggage (expensive clothes etc.) get separate insurance for loss.

I also have a few specific ones, but those will apply to very few.

Agree on the lists. I have one of stuff I have to do to get the house ready to leave...another with all the toiletries stuff I like to have.

I like to travel light, and prefer extended stays. I always get a condo/villa with a kitchen and its own washer/dryer. I can have breakfast in...and need very few clothes.

If people don't want to spring for First Class...the airline may let you upgrade upon check-in for very little extra. Best to ask before checking any bags; First Class probably won't charge you for those.

Always...always...buy wheeled luggage.

Bring your GPS.

If you travel a lot, keep a separate set of regularly used items in your suitcase so you don't forget to pack them.

I always get a window seat so I can lean against the wall and sleep. Those neck pillows can be helpful if you do want to sleep.

And don't forget to pack a hair dryer if you're going to be staying with your balding cousin.... He won't have one.

Wow! Great tips!

I took a cat in a carrier in the cabin of the plane, to her new home in Houston ... turns out -- d'oh! -- the carrier has to go through the x-ray machine. Kitty of course cannot. It would have been better to have a harness and leash to hold her with while her carrier got xrayed! (Nothing bad happened but it was nerve-wracking and there was a scratch or 2.)

Great tips so far!

Really like the ones about being underwear or essentials in your carry on in case your suitcase doesn't arrive. That has happened to a few of my friends.

Also agree with wheeled luggage!! If it isn't, hopefully you can find a cart.

Agree with the window seat as well, especially for longer trips. I also back a small pillow to use.

How about some travel safety tips?

Always keep a look out after your bag so no one puts anything in it while you are not looking.

If heading to a beach location, pack a bathing suit and a small bottle of lotion in your carry on in case your luggage is lost. You also won't have to wait for the bellman to deliver your luggage which sometimes takes quite a while.

Don't ever put a re-corked half bottle of champagne in your suitcase to take it home!

(Learned that one the hard way, way back when I was young and dumb!)

What I did for mobile(cell) phone and internet is I bought a $2 Sim Card when I got to my destination and $20 worth of credit. I also bought a PrePaid wireless broadband modem that came with 3 Gig of Data. Believe you me it's cheaper than using hotel's internet service.
