I'm not sure if this should go here or under politics, but here I go:

I try to refrain from entering American politics. We Canadians have enough of our own issues to deal with. But I've got a grievance against the American government this morning. This doesn't mean that the American people are bad; it just means that I'm questioning the wisdom of the American government.

I read in the paper this morning that the American government is planning on implementing an $5.50 per person entrance fee that Canadians, Mexicans, and people from the Carribean have to each time they enter the US. This fee is supposed to help the American government pay down its trillion dollar debt.

I live in Canada and visit the States two to three times per year. This means I'd be paying between $11 and $16 per year to help pay down the debt the US government has incurred. It's not going to rip a huge hole in my pocket, but I disagree with the principle of the idea. I'm not the one who incurred the debt - the American government incurred the debt. Why should I be stuck with paying the debt down? Wouldn't it be better for Americans to do more to encourage us to make more visits to your country? It would help in the long run - the more we spend there, the more moeny businesses will have and the more money the government will collect in sales taxes or whatever.

Charging us an entrance fee to pay down your debt isn't going to go over well here.

Last year I went to Dominican Republic and had to pay a $10 entrance fee to get through customs. I don't know what that was for, to "pay down debt" or whatever. I didn't have a problem with it.

Your information seems a bit confused.

The proposal is to remove the exemption (which Canadians currently have) to Canadians arriving by sea or air (there would still be no fee if you arrive by car). The purpose of the fee isn't to pay down the U.S. debt (other than the fact that it's proposed as one of many budget measures in the 2012 budget), but is to help offset increased border security/airport inspections costs.

If you look at your airline ticket when you fly to any other country, you'll see all kinds of fees added to your ticket (and, they are a lot more than $5.50!).

Whatever.

It's just one more tax that I can live without.

Seems like most countries charge to get in or leave.

I would call it a fee, not a tax, but there are clearly political reasons for Canadians to refer to it as a tax in order to increase opposition to the proposal. (Of course, if the proposal comes to pass, Americans will have to pay the fee as well when they return to the States...)

It's just annoying whatever you choose to calll it.

When you look at all the fees and taxes we've already got to pay for air travel, this $5.50 may be the $5.50 that's too much for some people. We've got the Goods and Services tax, a gasoline tax, airport improvement fees, security fees, and two or three other fees.

When you add up all the fees and taxes we've got to pay right here in Canada, that total is almost as high as the air fare itself. I'm left wondering when it's all going to end.

Considering I live 15 minutes from the Canadian border and dated someone last year from Canada... I am a little confused...

As of December 2010, it was $4 (US) per non-commercial vehicle to get over the border each way. Not per person. And it was for both US Citizens AND Canadian citizens. So a round trip was $8 (US). It didn't matter how many people were in the vehicle. (Aren't our dollars pretty much on par now?)

I had to pay $45 to get an enhanced license to be able to cross the border because I don't have a passport. A normal drivers license is only $13.

I tried to research the fees you are referring to and couldn't find anything that said it was $5.50 per person if you were Canadian. If you could provide your information and research, I'd love to read more up more on this.

Also, nowhere did I find ANY indication this was to pay down our debt. It's just was NearDC said it was.

And um... we have a ton of fees for flying, as well...

Yeah I just had another look at my e-ticket from my recent trip to New Zealand. on the receipt it had:
Taxes, Surcharges, Government and Airport Costs.
Totalling $129.46. Rather large percentage of a ticket that cost $471.46

I was hoping the purpose of the fee was to discourage people from visiting.
