Kerala is known as the land of Ayurveda, thanks to its pool of talented Ayurvedic scholars and the presence of various medicinal plants which grow abundantly in its forests. Kerala’s climate too supports its capability to nurture Ayurveda.

Ayurveda has grown tremendously as a tourism factor in Kerala and it alone is able to attract thousands of tourists every year. The Ayurveda tourists come to Kerala for availing various ayurvedic packagesor to learn about this traditional medical system.

``I have read a lot about Ayurveda and the importance given to it in Kerala society. I wanted to experience it by having a visit to the God’s Own country,’’ says Catherine Bowells, a medical student from Germany. She is happy that her visit happened to be in the Malayalam month of Karkitaka. ``I could try the medicinal gruel, which is part of the diet of Keralites in this month, ‘’ she says.

`` I also witnessed a person undergoing the sukha chikitsa, the Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapy. I think I will take many more visits to Kerala to learn more about it,’’ she adds.

Catherine, like many other medical students and Ayurvedic lovers are of the opinion that the possibility of Ayurveda as a healthcare system have not been exploited fully by the people.

Indian food is my favorite. It is just too bad that Indian cuisine is not part of the Ayurvedic diet .

I've studied Ayurvedic medicine and philosophy in the past, so I appreciate the interesting travel note.

Blessings,

rix
