Have you ever gone anywhere you maybe weren't that excited about, but once you got there, you were blown away by it and loved it?

~~~
That was how I came to love Nantucket Island. Some family members bought a house there and I (grudgingly) went to go visit them. I grew up on an island so it wasn't that big of a deal to me, the idea of going on vacation there. Well, I was enchanted by the place, and I have been back to visit numerous times. It's one of my very favorite places to go, now (stateside, anyway).
~~~

How about you? What place became an unexpected heaven for you?

Big Cedar Lodge:

Went to Branson, MO and decided to take a trip down to Arkansas. Just for the drive. It was the end of October and the trees were beautiful. On the way back, I noticed a sign on the side of the road that said "Big Cedar Lodge." No advertisements beforehand or anything. I said very quickly, "let's pull in there."

OMG. It was so beautiful!. Waterfalls that fell over 4 different levels of the road. Table Rock Lake. We rented a nice speed boat. Was able to get a nice picnic lunch. Went to dinner at a great restaurant. The steak melted in our mouths. Someone came to our cabin in the evening delivering fresh, warm ginger cookies. The scenery can't be described , especially in the fall.

Warm, cozy, classy, fun, romantic, unforgettable.

I would have given this place a "10" for customer service.

This will make me sound stupid but Yellowstone Park gave me more than I'd bargained for.

It was simply part of a road trip, saw that I'd have to go by / through it and thought, oh, that'll be quite pretty then, lots of trees!

I know!

Norris Geyser Basin is one of my most favourite places on this planet. I'd go back in a heart beat.

Turkey. Yes, Turkey...

Of course, this was before the war. I had to move there for work for a year and was scared to death because my only experience/knowledge of Turkey was from the movie, "Midnight Express."

The first few nights there took some getting used to. They're very Westernized, but still carry a lot of Muslim traditions. After a short time, though, I absolutely fell in love with the place. I'd go back in an instant.

Ah, my friend is keen to go travelling around the interior this summer. I'm a bit of a geology geek and I want to see the cappadocia (I imagine it's like a worn out Bryce Canyon) and the pamukkale hot springs.

Any travel advice? Do you think two women would be ok that far away from the tourist coastline? I'm blonde, which I know a lot of women can find problematic when they're in Turkey but I don't scare easy.

A cruise to Alaska.

It was our honeymoon. He wanted it...I wanted the tropics. We used to joke we weren't going to be able to take the same honeymoon.

When we cruised into Glacier Bay...there were ice floes all around us, each one having a seal on it, sunning himself... There were literally thousands of them, all around us.

Now I understand there are less than 3000 left, unfortunately.

One night, outside Ketchikan...we laid in bed and saw all these flashing lights swirling around outside. We went out on the balcony...and there must have been 10,000 birds, the whole length of the ship, from the ocean clear to the top deck, swirling all around us...

The ship was lit up at night; insects from the land were drawn to the lights...and the birds were having a feeding frenzy, all around us.

It was a sight I'll never forget.

Stockholm, Sweden, in summer, it was a magical place, I loved it.

84* was an unusual heat wave, and in Ganla Stan, the old town, the licorice ice cream cone was the best one I had in my whole life!

And in July/August, it was about 21 hours a day of sunshine, so lots of time to enjoy everything comfortably.

The government palace, the harbor and old town are so close together, all of it is so easily walkable.

Great shopping, modern sophisticated..but nearby in the park is a cool craft market.

Safe, pretty friendly, and almost everyone speaks English!

I was shocked and stunned and astonished in a very GOOD way.

What's not to like?

Cancun!! I went there over 10 yrs ago and did lots of partying during spring break...so it wasn't a big deal to me.

I went there again last month and being had the best time. I did a few tours, did some sight seeing, visited native Mayans, the ruins, and much more. There is so much culture in Mexico that it gets overlooked. Very beautiful.
