What is the one travel thing you've never done that you wish you had, or could?

Cross country drive of the USA?

Backpacking Europe or South East Asia?

Alaskan cruise?

Tell us!

And if you had to take a first step toward achieving that travel dream, what would that first step be?

My Mum's family are from UK. Since I was quite young, I've always wanted to go and check UK out for several months and also visit some other places such as Iceland, Switzerland and France.

The biggest detractor has been saving money to actually do this. I have long service leave now, so that with accumulated annual leave, I could easily take four months leave ... just lack the cash to do so.

Stuff like that has happened to me before though, the timing hasn't been quite right. I'd like to get this trip in sometime in the next five years.

So, Meri, what do you have to do to get that going?

Not sure what your budget or lifestyle is like but would something like giving up the daily latte and socking away the money help?

Oh, man, me too! I have a dear friend who is a pianist for a cruise line, and the photos from his time on the Alaska circuit was amazing.

The way I see it, it's not unrealized until I'm dead.

I have a 0-7 year short list which includes: Arizona-Grand Canyon; California-Redwood National Park, Washington- Mt. Ranier, Alaska- Denali and Gateway to the Arctic N.P.; Hawaii- Haleakala and Hawaii Volcanoes National Parks; Costa Rica- rainforest; England (again)-must get back into that British Museum!

And a 10-20 year long list: China; Israel; Palau- I want to SCUBA dive in Jellyfish Lake; Pompeii; Greece; Australia- to SCUBA dive the Great Barrier Reef; New Zealand; ANTARCTICA!

So much to see and learn and a whole lifetime to enjoy seeing and learning!

Today is the second to the last day of Le Tour de France and Lance Armstrongs last tour time trial. While this hasn't been a good Tour for him-he had several bad crashes early in the tour that took him out of competition for the podium-he's still a hero and the athlete I've admired most. I've followed Armstrong for 15 years and have really wanted to see him ride in the tour.

I was all set to go this year when things came up..of course they do! Last winter, when I should have been making plans I had a broken foot instead. My daughter assured me that "Lance will be doing another Tour, of course" and my surgeon refused to endorse my getting back on the bike until May - no way I could get ready to ride a bike in France in 2 months.

So I cancelled my plans and began to train for next year...only to find out that this IS Lances last Tour and probably his last competition.

Truly bummed out about this! I'll still make plans for the Tour, maybe in 3 years when I'm 70 and the Tour is 100! My goal is to join a ride/caravan for 3 weeks where I can ride my bike if I want but can also take time off and let someone drive me when it's long distances between stages.

Other as yet unrealized travel goals are a distillery tour of Scotland and a painting summer in Tuscany.

Wow, you folks are going places!

Roxy, I'm sorry you missed Lance but I hope you can make it in 3 years...that would be SO cool.

Olney and Red - I hear Alaska is amazing, a lot of the brides on our wedding sites go on cruises there for Honeymoon, a good friend of mine went on vacation last year and her photos were UNREAL!

WY, that sounds like some list you've got there - exciting stuff. Though, is it safe to scuba in Jellyfish Lake?! Sounds scary to me!

~~~
I think mine is a 6 week tour of Europe ending with a week in a Tuscan villa with a chef/housekeeper. Aaaah, that would be heaven.
Of course, island-hopping in the Caribbean wouldn't be too bad either.
My next step for either of those, I think, would be to win the lottery
~~~

Let's hear more, folks!

I've always wanted to go on an African safari. I've done a bit of research and it's pretty expensive so I'm having trouble finding someone to go with me.

I will however be traveling to Egypt in November so I can cross Africa off my list of continents to visit.
