I've stayed in hostels and hotels all over the world and i would say that I'm a streetwise guy. I trusted the Lonely Planet's number one pick and this is what happened:

I stayed at the Pho Bien in Nha Trang January 2010. Although very pleasant people money was taken from my bag. In total around $100 (some euros, some pounds, some dollars and Vietnam Dong.) The money was taken between 11pm and 2am while I was out. Also, before this happened I woke in the middle of the night to find my door open! Only a few inches as there's a safely lock that only allows it that much. When I told reception they said it must have been the wind and I hadn't shut it properly. Obviously the night watchmen on his first attempt to steal. I would strongly advise against staying here even if it is the number one pick in Lonely Planet. The manager said that they couldn't do anything but would keep an eye on him! As for my money, hard luck. There are no authorities to call in Viet Nam and so be very careful. I did meet another older couple there who said things had been moved in there room when they were out. They couldn't account for anything missing.....yet!
