go in the fall, mid to late October and you stand to miss some of the crowds. Italy, Portugal, Spain and Greece can be wonderful that time of year.

Totally depends what you want to see... or what sort of things you want to do.

Have traveled some in Europe (living here), and know about many places one should see/ go to of different reasons.

The amount of days you're staying in Europe and travel budget also has a lot to say. Some countries here is dirt expensive, others very cheap (mostly Eastern Europe).

If you are on a budget, check out Craigslist for Vacation rentals...go in the off seasons, talk to complete strangers, and try to pick up a few phrases of the country you are visiting.....

Try house sitting. I have done house sitting in a couple of central american and south american countries-Costa Rica and Peru - all I had to pay for was the electricity and my food, I did dog care at one place, dog horse and poultry care at another and supervised a general remodel at a third, where I spent 3 months. I speak spanish so it helps, but it isn't always necessary..

I frequently see ads for European house sitting gigs. Just google house sitting and the country and a list of available places should show up, It's a great way to spend more than the usual 2 week vacation.

If you like bicycling, that's an awesome way to go. There are even touring companies that take care of your luggage and hotel bookings, etc.

My favorite ride is from Amsterdam to the Black Sea: along the Rhine, Main and Danube. Stick to the roads alongside the rivers and canals, and it's actually pretty easy riding, even with full panniers. There are tons of historical villages along the way, with castles, cathedrals, friendly folks and great food!

my first time to europe was last year and I spent 6 weeks in Italy in mid Sept to late Oct.
Was amazing! A good time, cause it wasn't too busy, but weather was still lovely.
Just GO!!!

I can always recommend Germany... especially the south with all it's castles and bavarian traditions. As a north-german I'm not too thrilled about baveria but I have to admit that the have a great culture & nature! I short trip to Austria would also be a great experience for every traveller!

I also really liked Paris. We spent 4 days there but we didn't have enough time to see everything!
