Each of us have our own idea of what we mean by the term "Want to Travel". Are you someone who just goes and visits for a weekend/or two weeks or do you tend to move from place to place?

And are your trips cruises or to a resort, sort where you don't really interact with the locals or do you prefer go to some place where you can interact with the locals.

While I love cruises for 2-5 day rests, my other trips are normally to a city to learn the city, see the sights, and meet the people in that area.

But I am also a Nomad/3rd Cluture Kid/Amry Brat so when in my profile I say that I'm interested in traveling I am also thinking of moving to other places for a while or maybe even adopting the snow bird lifestyle, one place for winter and one for summer.

What are your assumptions of what the statement "Want to Travel" means in a Profile? I'm wanting to make mine as acurate as possible.

There does not seem to be a EHarmony catoragory/questionaire result that would have them sending me other nomads.

To me a nomad would suggest lack of stability, which would be unattractive to me.

I like to take weekends, weeks or even months (when possible) to travel. I have never been on a tour type trip where things were structured and we had to see certain things in a certain order and everyone stuck together. That would be stifling. Traveling off of the beaten path has always given me insight in to how other cultures live, and to learn those things is a lot of the reason that I travel. Its one thing to read about the poverty in Brazil, it's another to see it, be touched by it, and in a small way to help someone on another continent that you will probably never see again. Its grassroots. I like that.

Maybe I should of put the question as tourist, traveler or nomad?

Sounds like you would be a traveler, esp. with the comment that you have been places for a month in non-structured trips and preferred off the beaten path. And yes it is different to read vs see, first time seeing "Hollywood" area of Panama would be a major shock for most.

A tourist type would visit a county, stay in an american style hotel, visit the sites but would would probably not interact with the locals except on a limited basis.

As I mentioned I grew up a nomad, or third culture kid. So to me its not that unstable, having parents that were married almost 60 years before my dad died, who were military 26 years and moved from country to country for at least 20 of those years. Studies on TCK's (third culture kids) show that we have lower divorce rates than normal and that our parents had lower than normal divorce rates. However TCK's tend to marry older.

However nomads often prefer to move somewhere for a year to 3 years but by year four are definitely ready for the next move. I've managed 20 years with one "permanant" address but worked in a field that was fast moving and "project" orientated, eng/construction projects last 6-18 months and you seldom have the same staff on any two projects so you are meeting and working with a new group of 200-2500 people every year or so and what you are working on changes.

Since I'm currently owned by a house I am thinking about doing some traveling until the market improves and I sell. But considering going back to being a nomad after that.

On the other hand I love cruises .. not so much for where they go but I grew up traveling by ship and I find it very relaxing .. its sort of my ideal of a hotel stay.

How was Brazil, and where did you go?

I like all of the above and have done all of the above.

I enjoyed my Alaskan cruise (wouldn't want to camp there)

I' enjoyed backpacking in Costa Rica

And I' enjoyed the all inclusive in Cancun.

I don't see any need to limit myself to just one experience-each ofers a different type of enjoyment.
and as a BTW-I an HOPING to go to Le Tour De France next year, spend 3 weeks with a bike tour company and a month touring by rail, taking and painting pictures and eating grandly. I'll stay in good hotels and in hostels and in B&Bs-where ever I can be with the citizens of the town.

acelticsteve ... that sometimes happens to Military, esp. Navy as ya'll move more. There's a percentage of Brats that decide they are moved out .. then there are those of use that get suitcase fever regularly.

Legend29, always been a nomad? Or did you take it up later?

Nomad in my youth - I think from the age of 18 I stayed no more than 4 years in one place (and that was usually for college) other than that it was up sticks every 2 years - I'd get itchy feet - want to see and experience new things, places and people.

Once I married and children came, unfortunately I got grounded, still have the itchy feet but my wings are tied. Maybe one day........

Definitely a traveler. I travel for both business and pleasure and have had the privelege of visiting a lot of places, both foreign and domestic.

Despite that, however, I could never be a nomad (although I once had a '57 Chevrolet Nomad but that's for posting on another board somewhere). One of the few totally non-negotiable things in my life is that I will not move from my hometown - ever. I've lived here all my life, I love it, and the notion of moving to me seems unthinkable.
