I am in the process of doing an approximate 1200 kms journey from Edmonton, Alberta to Portland, Oregon. Has anyone ever taken a trip to the states and how?? Looking for some suggestions and preferred routes that were taken. Have been looking at the maps and it seems that I go through the state of Washington, through the Spokane area. Is this a good way to do at this time of year??

Any suggestions??

Thanx.BG

Hi - driving from Portland to Edmonton, well you just might be passing through some really pretty country there!

If you are a AAA or a CAA member (depending on where you live) you can get maps through their travel service. I forget what they are called, but it is a service they have offered for years. In fact, even if you are not a member it might be a good idea for you to join before you go on this trip. If you have a breakdown, or run out of gas or anything like that, their service is excellent (That's been my personal experience) Worth looking into. Something goes wrong, it can save you major cash.

If you want to do some sightseeing on the way, instead of a straight through drive, they can help plan your trip for you that way too, points of interest, hotels/motels etc. Quite the good service.

Hopefully they still offer it, worth asking them the question I think.

Driving through the Rockies, wonderful trip if you have never done it - breathtaking views.

Are you from Canada or the US?

Oh, if you are doing the drive through the mountains this time of year, check the weather - the driving can be pretty hairy if you hit a medium to big storm this time of year. Have a planned place to spend the night just in case you need to, usually a good idea around there....

I know the area very well, as I live in Portland with family in central WA state...

Are you going for speed or doing some sight seeing along the way also?

If you have time for sight seeing, I'd head west at Spokane and go to Leavenworth WA, a delightful Bavarian community in the cascades and a fun place to spend a day just looking around, or several days having fun. You can either go over the hill to the North side of the Seattle area on Hwy 2 from there, or head back towards Wenatchee a few miles and then south over Blewett Pass.

There has been snow this week there however....

If for speed, then grab I-90 to the west at Spokane to Seattle, when there get on 405 on the east side of Lake Washington in the Bellevue/Seattle area, go south to i-5 and to Portland for the quickest but most boring route.

Slightly longer is to head off i-90 in the Ellensburg area and go thru the Yakima Valley to Biggs Junction in Oregon, then west on i-84...thats my favorite route year around for scenery and interest.

Feel free to message me if you want more information-my sis lives in Leavenworth and I love the place..plus it's so pretty this time of year there.

I need a detailed map of how to travel from Edmonton to Portland, and do I head onto the I-5 to get through Portland as well. I am moving just outside of Portland, and need some details, so if anything reach me as well at my profile page. Very important, planning on doing this within the next month or so. Not really into the scenic route at this point. Maybe later, when we've settled in for a little while. Just want to get there for now. Want the easiest and fastest way possible. Thanx again. BG

Thanx, BG

I am from the Canada going to the states. And I was also wondering about using my AMA for the travelling. I hope it's easy to use or do I need to get AAA instead and can I as a Canadian. Going to have to check this out.

I was going to try and travel through the Rockies, they are goreous at this time or any time of year, but are easy prey to the weather, and if we hit a blizzard, watch out, we'll be marooned for a couple of days, so I am thinking about going to Lethbridge instead. We'll see. Still working out the details as we speak.

You could try plugging the start and destinations into Google Maps?

I've actually driven on I-5 from CA to BC many times - OR and WA are very pretty. And drove from Vancouver to SK through the rockies about a month ago. But I have an all-wheel-drive vehicle so I'm not too concerned with snow/ice/etc.

I-5 meets up with HWY 99 in BC on the way to Vancouver, btw. Be sure to look at the maps for mountains, and check the weather frequently.
