I have a nightmare in Hanoi and Sapa
In Hanoi we got in a taxi with a corrupt taxidriver, his meter was running twice as we were really driving and when we wanted to stop, the driver threatened us with a stick. He wanted the money for the distance he had already driven (20.000 dong for 500 meter).
There were 3 hotels with the same name in a row in Hanoi. We had booked one and the one we walked in said we had to wait until 8 am before we could get the room with window for 15 dollar (which they also said in a reservation e-mail). We could wait in a small other room without window (which they did not say in their e-mail; it said we had to wait in the lobby and could use the internet there). So when I asked about this internet at 8 am, they took me to the hotel with the same name next door. There I asked about the room and got the room for the price they e-mailed me. When I wanted to pick up my luggage, the first hotel charged me 15 dollar for the room! For just 3 hours without any using of the toilet or shower. And the room with window costs 15 dollar, so the room without should be less right? No, also 15 dollar. Great.
In Sapa my friend got hit by a car. He was protecting his head by raising his arm (cars were racing by on the road really close). His hand touched a outside mirror of a passing car and the mirror folded inward (like you sometimes do when you park your car on a busy road). The driver got mad and wanted 4 million dong (300 dollar) for his broken window (which wasn't broken at all). He grabbed a stone and wanted to throw it at my friend when he refused to pay. Thank god there were more people there to help him, because this would have escalated badly otherwise. An English guy and his Vietnamese wife passed by and talked to us and them. She said that the driver said that we were just rich Westerners and that we could well pay a 100 dollars. The English guy guy told us this happens everyday over there. So this is how some North Vietnamese make a living.
This is our experience and I am sure there are much more nice Vietnamese than bad ones, but take this as a warning. Be careful not to get hit by a car, because you have to pay for it.

Yes from August 22 of this year I was leaving for a cruise and there were several bad moments. My plane was 2 & a half hours late leaving to my final destination to board the ship i was leaving on. Then once on board we were not able to leave port because of a hurricane until the next day. Then they made changes on how we were suppose to have dinners there were no reservations as I always have. I was given a pager and told it might be as late as 3 hours before I could be paged. They over booked the trip. So with all that happened I still like cruising and would do it again. But I would pick a better time of year. The time before that I had a bad time for 3 days. There was a thing in the heating/air conditionaire system it was rather noisy and kept me awake for 3 nights. When i complained about it the person in question thought I was crazy but I keep complaining and finely got it fixed, And I got a discount on my next trip which I just took. Sometimes life hands you these things to test us. Other vacations have been fine on cruises.

I went to Saudi Arabia back in 1990. Man, was it hot as heck there. I ended up living in a tent, located in the middle of a dried out river bed, for 6 months, with 20 other guys. The fine silt got into everything - your clothes, electronics, your hair, and everything else. I never felt clean.

Our bathroom was a wooden shack that was 100 yards away. There was 1/2 of a 55 gallon drum down there and once a week, someone had to drag it out and burn in contents with a mixture of diesel and gasoline. Shower facilities consisted of a stall just large enough for you to stand it. Once in awhile, someone had to carry buckets of water and fill up the water tank that sat on top. There was only cold water. Of course, anyone walking by could see you. Since there was no indoor plumbing, we also had to brush our teeth, shave etc outside from a bowl of cold water.

We had outside dining only. As soon as you walked out of the food tent, you had to start shoving food down your throat as fast as you could before a million flies got to it. Trash was burned in a huge pit with gasoline and there were rats all over it. There were no facilities to wash your clothes so you had to wash it in a bucket. The nearest shopping was about 3 miles away and you had to walk there. The town wasn't much... just a few houses and shops that resembled something from a UNICEF commercial.

You had to walk every where and there were little sharp rocks embed in the river bed that would make your feet hurt at the end of the day. On top of lacking indoor plumbing, there was no electricity. If you wanted light at night, you better have a flashlight or candles. There were sand bags piled up waist high all around our tent. Good thing because one morning, a scud missle was shot down 2 miles down the road.

Ahh good memories

well my story pales in comparison.

i had trouble when i was leaving brazil. when i went to check in at the airport they pulled me aside to a small room and made me open my suitcase and carry on. they searched EVERYthing. they opened all of my makeup compacts any closed container they opened. they made me power on my cell phone and dug through the rest of my suitcase. then when i arrived in my us transfer airport they searched my luggage AGAIN. i think my stuff was searched a total of three times. it makes me not want to go back there.

Mine is no comparison at all, really.

We were spending several weeks in the Hawaiian Islands. On Kauai we had a 2bed 2bath condo, so we invited another couple. All they had to do was fly over, we already had the condo & car paid for. But the husband was so tight that every night the four of us could barely agree on where to go for dinner. It was a relief at the end of a week to go on to another island without them.

And for some reason, after 9-11, we got stopped at every airport, every single time, for the full search. It got so bad we decided that all travel within the continental US is best done by car, even if we had to drive a week to get there! Good thing I like the All-American Road Trip...

My only bad travel experience was when I was at an all-inclusive resort in Puerto Vallarta (I think it was called Las Palomas). The stay was actually PERFECT except for how I was treated by them after slipping on a wet floor and injuring my back. They seemed annoyed to deal with me, and although they had a doctor on the premises who gave me a shot for the pain (that was all they did for me) they actually billed me for a doctor visit ($130) even though it was their fault that the floor was wet with no caution cones or anything. I was INCREDIBLY miffed.
