I am retiring soon and plan on spending my winters somewhere warm. I have been looking all over the internet to find places that have relatively inexpensive accomodations , are near a beach and are great places to live. What about all you people who live in Texas, Florida or California or the like--any insider tips on places I should research?

I enjoy Mobile, Alabama, Biloxi, Mississippi, and Penscacola, Fla. Compared to a lot of places, the cost of living there is lower. Perhaps b/c they're in Hurricane Alley, where in Mobile, the beach house I stayed in was destroyed a week later.

I've been looking at moving to Biloxi and I've been doing research these past 6 months. I need to spend more time there before making a decision, plus I don't know how well I'll do w/ rednecks. Where I live now the people are very open and accepting others, their beliefs and lifestyles.

A friend of my mother's (lived in Nebraska) used to spend every winter in Carlsbad, California.

Have you ever considered Mexico?

Marlo I find going to an island very relaxing but if you are going to retire try Aruba or St. Maarten, Netherlands, Antilles or St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands I've been to all of them and found them a lot of fun the beaches are very nice. The people are very friendly and helpful. There are other places in the winter that are warm. I've also been to the Pamana Canal in the winter and it was warm there so you have time to make up your mind. These are just suggestions.

Have you considered Brazil? In you wintertime, it will be a blazing summer here. But I don't recomend Rio-- too crowdy and dangerous for tourists. Think about Natal, João Pessoa, Recife...

Puerto Rico and Dominican Rep - are also great islands to consider.
Also, Costa Rica is beautiful and safe.

What?!? She didn't like Nebraska winters?!? They build character, I tell you! Character!

Actually, I've found a lot of people like to spend the winter under a tree and a tarp next to the railroad tracks.

(In case you can't guess.... I'm from Omaha, and I work in property management for a major railroad company. )

you have a good sense of humor... haha I was in Omaha this summer and really would not want to be there again during the blazin summer days. I've never been to a place so hot in my life, mind you, I have been to the caribbean but Omaha had no comparison with the heat. I can only imagine your winters! HA!

I agree with 'followmesky'..Costa Rica is warm (its summer there) affordable and beautiful. I've spent several winters there and plan on doing more.

I usually stay in hostels or if I'm planning to go for a longer time I try to house sit. Contrary to what you might read on internet sites, Costa Rica is not dangerous. This 'mature' woman was never hassled on her trip and took local busses everywhere.

You can also get excellent and inexpensive dental and medical work done there..last year I had 2 tooth implants done at about 1/4 the cost here in the US.
