I want to vacation on a Caribbean Island in October, and would like some suggestions. It's got to have beautiful beaches, great opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving, a bit of laid-back but sophisticated night life, and be a place where I can relax, hassle-free. Any ideas?

Too bad that you Americans can't go to Cuba. It is inexpensive, a great place-beautiful beaches and the people are so friendly.

Try the Barbados . Go to the south area around St Lawrence Gap or Rockley beach area . They have lots of great spots to choose from and you can get some great efficiency apts right near or on the beach. Also there are some all inclusive places. Language is english .

You do realize that it's hurricane season in October right? I'm not sure what you mean by sophisticated night life, but Turks & Caicos has beautiful beaches, snorkeling (I don't dive) and is very laid back. Grand Cayman is equally as beautiful.

I have been to Bahamas, St. Thomas, San Juan, and Turks & Caicos islands. Turks and Caicos was beautiful. I was at Grand Turks but there is the main town of Provenciales (sp?), called Provo for short. Grand Turks is not as populated but was still nice and I think Provo has some nice resorts and night life.

Well, I've signed up for a Princess Cruise, since I couldn't decide upon an island. I'll see Cozumel, Bermuda, Roatan (Honduras) and Princess Cays. I wanted to get scuba certified but don't have time in my busy schedule to do that. So I will do a guided Discover Scuba excursion.

Anything thoughts on what sights to see at those places?

Turks & Caicos has everything that you described. Personally I would wait another month, if not get travel insurance.

Princess Cruises has shore excursions in each port. You can review them by going to their website or asking your travel agent. Cozumel is a divers haven. Mostly divers are there.

I am a travel professional and this is my first time on this part of e-harmony. I would have recommended more all inclusive coices that way you would have been able to get your certification at a resort that offered a scuba program

Princess Cays is Princess's private island lots of beach fun, shopping with locals, and food at no additional cost

No need to fear any hurricanes while sailing with Princess. The ship's crew would change course if need be.

October is a good time to travel, even with it being Hurricane Season. I travel often to the Caribbean and have never experienced any problems with weather

Enjoy your stay

I think you are heading into hurricane season in October. You may want to change the dates.

I have been to St. Thomas, St Johns, Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Caymans and Cozumel. Grand Caymans has been the most memorable because my daughter and I swam with sting rays. It was the coolest experience ever.

I suggest you take a cruise if you cannot decide on one particular island. I've heard from other travelers that St. Baarts is the best island. I haven't been there yet.

If it's scuba diving you're looking to do I would recommend the Mexican Riviera (south of Cancun) or Cozumel. The second largest reef system on the planet (next to the GBR in Australia) is along the Mexican coast down to Belize. Been there 3 times and would and will go back. Just awesome. Good fishing too.

I've been to Jamaica (6 times), Bahamas, Bermuda, St. Croix, Dominican Republic, Bequia & Mystique all once. Jamaica offers the most to do and the biggest bang for the buck but poor diving & snorkeling stuff. But I still keep going back.

If you go during hurricane season, get the trip insurance.

Go to Jamaica (MOntego Bay or Ocho Rios) beautiful - ocean - Dunn's River Falls (you HAVE TO CLIMB THEM) and you don't want to miss the party on the boat (full blast on the open sea) after - memorable snorkeling also on the same expedition - worth every penny.
The Bar Margaritaville (shuttle bus from your hotel nightly) in Montego Bay is Jimmy Buffet's song bar... I brought back many souvenirs for all of my friends who dreamed of at the Margaritaville Bar...
If you like, you can go to Bob Marley's place where his body has been brought back and you can smoke all the dope you want... no cop will go near the place (it is SACRED)...
Ya Mon and Hi Ree are the expressions that you will hear over there ALL THE TIME and used for everything... you will see...
The FOOD IS INCREDIBLE - SO SO good... not at all like what you would get in Cuba (Varadero) or in Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic) - but similar to what you could get in Saint-Martin... if not better yet... no disappointment there - the food is EXCELLENT I'm telling you... you tell me when you get back...
Saint-Martin is also an excellent destination (was ma favorite) but it will cost you double the price maybe --- however - very interesting and different - as that is NOT a poor country - it is half FRENCH and half DUTCH - you land directly on the beach - in fact you think that some sunbathers will get hit when you get there... there is a bar at the airport where you get served for free if you are a woman and going topless - do not bring your children on that island if you want to experience it all... Casinos on the Dutch side - Nice little cafes on the French side... you can hitchhike without any problem... the island is very small... fun to explore... but as I said, it will probably cost you double what Jamaica costs...

Bon voyage!
