I love Italy and have been there 4 times already. The first time was my senior year in college when I took an Art History of Europe class and spent two weeks in Italy and the last time I was there was two years ago with two of my friends as we took a girls trip there.

Love, Love, Love Florence and that has to be my #1 favorite city in Italy. Been to Tuscany right outside of Florence, Rome, Venice, Milan, Pisa, Bologna, Naples, Sorento, Pompeii, etc. My next visit is going to be Lake Como, Italy where George Clooney, Brad Pitt and all the rich and famous hang out.

Nothing beats walking around first thing in the morning right when they are opening up the shops and having breakfast in one of the cafes. The food is to die for over in Italy and can't beat eating gelato for dessert everyday.

If you have never been there before, I recommend you go on a tour first instead of trying to navigate on your own. So much to see and do or if you are brave, hire a local to show you around as they are familiar with tons of off-beaten paths to take.

The scenerary is just breathtaking over there and depending where you go there is the Duomo, the Roman Colissium, the Vatican, Leaning Tour of Pisa, the Statue of David, Sistine Chapel, the Gold Bridge, the Ruins of Pompeii, or if you like military history, you can tour some of the WWII American cemetaries or see some of the battle sites in Naples or Sorento, etc.

Most importantly, my #1 favorite thing besides the food was the shopping!! Where else can you get a handmade Italian suit made for you, or get Italian Leather shoes cheap, or some fantasitic deals on gold jewelry or get a leather coat or belt custom made for you???

One more thing, it is helpful if you learn some of the basics greetings or sentences in their language. The majority of Italians speak English, but there are a few older ones that don't and it makes translations so much easier.

You are going to have a blast and Italians are so nice and I never had a problem over there. Just make sure you travel in groups and beware of pickpockets. Also make sure you have the address and phone# of the American Embassy on you at all times and make copies of your credit cards and passport and keep that on you at all times separate from everything else.

Have fun and so jealous and now you got me thinking that I need to plan another trip over there!!

Thank you! It's funny, as fast as time goes by, 2 years still seems like SO LONG.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I can hardly wait!

I slipped and mentioned this trip to my Mom yesterday who of course immediately said, "can I go?" She was NOT happy with me when I said no. lol
It was difficult to make her understand why a grown woman would NOT want to go to an incredibly romantic country for the first time with her MOM!

You are so lucky! I miss Italy... Check out Castel de San Angelo in Rome if you can. The Borguesh (sp?) gardens are beautiful, and the Pantheon. Ostia is a great little town with some quaint castles, it's right by the airport if you get in late and need to crash from the jet lag. Have fun! Oh and try to go to the gondolas in Venice, before the town sinks!

I'm having a sudden urge to count the money in my penny jar and see if you want to meet me in Italy!!

If you know the dimensions or your jar we can estimate the number of pennies inside, and thus the value.

While slightly less accurate, this is faster.

what are those gardens, where everyone walks around at night? touristy but so lively and pretty with the lights. i'm sure they're in or near florence.

how long will you stay?

my tip is rent an apartment. but if you stay in a hotel, never put anything in the hotel safe.

I am actually going skiing in Cortina in January. Planning to visit Venice & Rome while I'm there. I've been to Venice before and loved it. The Northern Italian region is one of my favorite places in the world.

Lori, Italy is so perfect that you should plan dozens of trips there. Since you have a couple of years befere you go, I'd suggest you to learn a little italian. In the major cities and in the touristic spots, it's easy to find people who can (or try to) understand english, but it's so great to go off the beatten track that it would be a sin to loose that part just because you can't speak a little italian.
My last trip to Italy was two years ago, and I spent three weeks there. I was traveling solo (I love solo trips!!!). Here are my tips:
ROME- it's the most beautifull city in the whole universe! It's not like Paris, where you realize the bbeauty all around you the moment you get there. In Rome, you have to take you time and let the magic of those yellows and ocres gown in your heart. Try to take long walks (Via Giullia, Trastevere and Il Ghetto, for instance), take your breakfast in Campo dei Fiore street market (marvelous fruits!!!)... Stay at least a week.

Of course you shuold go to Florence and Venice-- the most adorable experience is to walk through Venice's "streets" and cross its thousands of bridges at night, all by yourself. It's simply magic!
Close to Florence-- 10 minutes bus ride-- you will find the lovely Fiesole, up in the hills (wonderfull views of Florence too). Here you can really hear the silence and enjoy all the colours of a Tuscany countryside in the autumm. So, don't miss Fiesole.
In Tuscany, you should't also miss Siena, Monteriggiano and San Gimignano. I chose not to rent a car, because, as I said, I was traveling solo, and you cant drive and keek your eyes on the landscape both at the same time. But you can go everywhere with public transportation. Try to spend at least one night in Siena and in San Gimignano, to walk the medieval streets at night, discovering the charming little squares and all
But if you really want to know what is paradise like, you must see Naples (Napoli). You will never forget the view from Cape Posilipo. And then, take the bus down Costiera Amalfitana to Amalfi. You could go by car, but it's soooooo beautifull that's bet to keep both eyes on the cliffs and the sea. From Amalfi, you can take busses to Positano, Vietri Sul Mare and Ravello (Ravello is a must. GO!!!).

I'd be glad to answer any questions you might have.

It depends on how much knowlege of latin laguages you have. I'm a portuguese native speaker, so, it was very easy to learn italian and spanish-- it didn't work so well for my french learning, though...

But anyway, learning a language always depends on how much you'll gonnna need it...
