So I was wondering what my fellow travelers would say was their most inspiring and/or life changing place they have ever been to. I'll start and say that Burma (Myanmar) has been the most life changing place I have been to and seen. If you aren't aware of the situation in Burma, I'll fill you all in on a little bit, and then if you have questions feel free to ask me. Burma now known as Myanmar is run by a brutal dictatorship, and live on less than a dollar a day. I spent a week in Burma in the fall of 2006. I immedately fell in love with the country, culture, religion, and the people. They are the most geniune and giving people anyone will ever meet. They live every day in poverty and fear, yet they are the most giving of anyone in the world. I spent a week experiencing the culture while spending nights in a hotel that rarely had electricity, the toilet leaked into the shower, and it was extremely hot at night. I spent my days riding on a lake while the rain poured down and the wind blew, we froze and were soaking wet, but it was the best trip I have ever had. One morning the damn broke and we were standing in about 3-4 ft of rain water in the dark at about 5am, we had to walk through the water barefoot not to ruin our shoes although I caught something in my two big toes and lost both large toe nails to it, but again it was the best trip I ever had and it was the people of the country that made it that way for us. I'm still very close to my tour guide, and we still talk several times a week online (which is not easy being that internet access is hard to come by in Burma as is electricity) Right now they only have electricity about 12 hours a day. I have now dedicated a lot of time to the democracy movement for the country. It certainly changed my life, and I pray I can return some day. I would love to hear other's experiences.

I understand that feeling. I had a very spiritural experience in a mosque in Turkey. I'm not Muslim, and anyone that knows anything about the Islamic faith in the Islamic countries women normally aren't allowed in the area of the mosque that men are and especially not during one of the most important prayers of the day on one of the most important days in the history of the country, and a small group of about 13 students including myself were allowed to sit on a prayer rug in a tiny hole in the wall mosque in Istanbul during Friday noon prayer (the most important prayer time of the week), and on the 30th anniversary of one of the most promentiant men in Turkey's history's death. It was very moving. I also found the call to prayer throughout both Egypt and Turkey to be beauitful, I loved hearing it. Although most thought it was just noise, I thought it was beautiful.

Hello - I like this subject - the most inspiring place I have traveled was to Cyprus .. since that is where my Fathers' family is from it was inspiring to see the homeland of my ancestors and meet cousins and uncles and aunts I have never known ..

and although it was a while ago, it still stays fresh in my mind , the moutainsides , monastarys, turkish mosques , that at one time this isalnd was a united island with many nationalities and cultures ..

it inspired me to think about howthe ancients , tile by tile, laid out wonderous floors in honor of the Gods .. to vist Aphrodites' birthplace , and meet such friendly people that once they knew we were family there , were treated as such ..

it inspired me back to my youth , and the never ending questions about why we segragate and how it is done .. and that at one time all cultures were at peace and got along and sharedphilosphy and ideas .. and accepted each other as humans , and took an interest in the difference of culture ..

i still aspire to learning about this, and go back in my mind as to why and whne it all fell aprt and hatred grew .. and yet when you visit , the mosques are still considered holy places of worship, whereasit is the opposite from the other side .. churches were destroyed and are used as places of selling goods ..

it still astounds me that they are fidning more and more thoughout the middleeast how it was once a peaceful, artistic , cultural area .. but for few who proclaimed superiority, even within their own race and religions, destroyed the mecca of a united people .. and still hoping that we here can overcome these differences first , before spouting to the rest of the world our views , not mine, on others as to how we should behave ..

standing atop the Acropolis and Parthenon was awe inspiring .. and my only regret is that I may never get to re-visit or go to the other areas that are as rich in culture again ..

I'm not sure I can name one particular place that has inspired me because so many of them have been inspirations for different reasons, have different connections and meanings that said something to me in such a profound way. When I was young, I joined the military in order to see all of the places on the list in my head. I accomplished that now all of those places and sights have inspired me in some way. My visits to Germany, England and Spain fed my love of history, family and some kind of spiritual connection that is hard to explain, The ocean views from Northern California were awe inspiring to me and led to a love of the ocean even though I live in the middle of the USA. Maybe that's why I love Lake Superior, it reminds me of the ocean.

I love Spain to.

I didn't see the ocean for the first time until I was 25, then at 27, I lived on it for 4 months while I traveled around the world on a cruise ship. Now I miss the ocean terribly bad. I hate living where I do there isn't an ocean or anything remotely close to where I live, and that is only one of the reasons I dislike OKLAHOMA. Can't wait to leave

I have to admit, I've never been to Oklahoma, never had any burning desire to visit there eitherCan see why you probably can't wait to leave there! Although... I used to say the same thing about Minnesota, then couldn't wait to move back- except that now I am stuck in Southern Minnesota with corn fields when I would much rather be closer to the lakes and the trees of Northen Minnesota even it means 9-10 months of bone chilling cold which I hated when I was up there

I only spent a few weeks in Spain but for some reason it felt like I had been there forever! It was truly one of the most soul touching experiences I ever had while traveling. I knew absolutely no Spanish at the time, had done almost travelling on my own. But, somehow I knew where to go and how to get around in Barcelona. It was almost like I was being guided by someone else in my head? Anyway, I ended up in this little tiny maritime museum full of aricles recovered from old ships. I just stood there staring at all of those items and it was like I had seen them before. By the time I left, I was in tears and the elderly curator was hugging me, telling me something in Spanish. It was a very strange experience but after that I have never questioned the voice in my head or heart that tells me I need to go somewhere, or not go somewhere for that matter.

East Africa- was in Kenya and Tanzania two summers back. The African people, wildlife and culture changed my life forever. The incredible kindness and warmth of the African people was beyond any culture I have ever experienced in my life.

Kuwait- spent two weeks there on business as a single white 30 year old female. My perception of Muslims was changed forever and my last night there I had the most incredible heart to heart with a Kuwaiti family as I sat on the beach in my western clothes complete with a short sleeved shirt and shorts outside my American chain hotel. They invited me to their family circle, insisted I eat their food and talked until way past the sun going down. Even the mother felt comfortable enough to remove her scarf that covered her entire face but the eyes. I took a photo with them that night and promised I would never electronically send it and protect their privacy. It is one of my most cherished photos.

I had planned to go to Tanzania to volunteer for 3 weeks with an organization called Cross-Cultural Solutions, but wasn't able to gather the funds to do it in time, but I have heard wodnerful things about the area, and one day I really hope to go to Africa.

I have been to Turkey and Egypt, both predominately Muslim, and I'll admit I was terrified going there especially in this day and age after 9/11 and being an American, but I was treatd with the utmost respect and kindness especially in Turkey, and developed an entirely differen't understanding also.
