13 miles down a dirt road, from Abiquiu (I think I am not spelling that right)new Mexico, to Christ of the desert monastery. benedictine; sang vespers with the monks. simple, searing, soulful.

Sighisoara, Romania. The clock tower is fascinating--it has survived Hungarian and Romanian rule. It is a gorgeous site to behold, and I took about 30 photos of it.

This medieval city is the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, btw.

I haven't been much of a world traveler yet. I did once climb a mountain with my dad in Idlewild California. We go to the top and the other side was a sheer drop to the valley floor, I don't know how many hundreds of feet. Literally could have take a step and fallen all the way down. Could see what must have been fifty miles out into the Central Valley. I'll always remember that.

Machu Pichu has been the most awe inspiring place I have been. There was a spirituality about it that I have never experienced before. Istambul the most beautiful place. Working in an Aboriginal community the most challenging. Palau the best for diving.
Where is Machu Pichu?

I loved Istanbul. I didn' think I would, but I did like it.
Peru. It's beautiful (I've seen lots of pictures) and I'd love to go myself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machu_Picchu

Great topic, Terizz. I heard from my friend in Burma as well: good to know our friends are alive and safe.

Scotland, for me. I was living with a Scotsman (immigrated to Canada) a few years ago. We ended up going on a week trip there when friends of ours got married and went to Scotland for their honeymoon. 6 of us went and rented a castle for the stay, and since Paul (my ex) was from Dunblane/Stirling area we had a built in guide. I'd always wanted to go since my own family was from Scotland (great grandparents immigrated in the 1800's) and we have our own crest and tartar.

It was by far the most moving experience I've ever had. It felt like I was coming home...I'm sure that sounds cliche'd but I can't think of any other way to describe it. We went to Loch Lomond, Eilan Donan castle, Stirling Castle (and the bridge), Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Glen Coe...you name it, we went there. I plan on going back again in a few years when my daughter is older and can better appreciate the history and culture there.

Another favourite spot is Cuba (and I know American's can't go there, which is a shame). The people there are beyond friendly. My daughter, who was 7 when we last went over Christmas holidays, and I felt completely safe both on and off the resort. We did a lot of off-resort touring (on our own, at times) and I always felt welcomed and looked after.

It'll be a great day when that monster Castro finally dies and the people can begin the hopefully quick and bloodless process of kicking the rest of the bums out. That'll be such a vibrant and fun place once it comes alive again and reaches its full potential as it joins the rest of the free world.

The Louvre in Paris. An awesome place to feel the unbelieveable greatness of intelligence and talent!

Katinka
And right across the Seine from The Louvre is the Musee D'Orsay, great visit for fans of impressionism.

Other places I have liked were Amsterdam for its style and contrasts (The Anne Frank house definitely leaves you with much to reflect on - not too far of a walk from something verrrrry different: the Red Light district). Rome also is chock full of amazing art.

What a fun topic. You all have been to some fantastic places. I have several that have been very inspiring not sure which would be the most... Loved Norway and visiting the home where my grandfather was born and learning the history. Pretty cool that my grandfathers barn is in a museum now. Several places in The Netherlands, including Rotterdam and Amsterdam but a few off the beaten path places. England, Scotland and Wales fantastic history and the cathedrals are fantastic. Australia for the different wildlife and birds. The latest being Malawi and Zambia in Africa. Absolutely amazing wildlife and the people provide such learning experiences. I do want to go back there for an extended period of time, 5 weeks just was not enough. Though it was a very "spiritual" trip.

I'd have to say Venice... Venice is a place that will put you in awe. Once there, you'll think you're in a James Bond movie from the seventies. It has all what you are looking for in a travel destination.
