East Africa- was in Kenya and Tanzania two summers back. The African people, wildlife and culture changed my life forever. The incredible kindness and warmth of the African people was beyond any culture I have ever experienced in my life.

Kuwait- spent two weeks there on business as a single white 30 year old female. My perception of Muslims was changed forever and my last night there I had the most incredible heart to heart with a Kuwaiti family as I sat on the beach in my western clothes complete with a short sleeved shirt and shorts outside my American chain hotel. They invited me to their family circle, insisted I eat their food and talked until way past the sun going down. Even the mother felt comfortable enough to remove her scarf that covered her entire face but the eyes. I took a photo with them that night and promised I would never electronically send it and protect their privacy. It is one of my most cherished photos.
I had planned to go to Tanzania to volunteer for 3 weeks with an organization called Cross-Cultural Solutions, but wasn't able to gather the funds to do it in time, but I have heard wodnerful things about the area, and one day I really hope to go to Africa.

I have been to Turkey and Egypt, both predominately Muslim, and I'll admit I was terrified going there especially in this day and age after 9/11 and being an American, but I was treatd with the utmost respect and kindness especially in Turkey, and developed an entirely differen't understanding also.
Ohh I've wanted to go to Turkey for awhile now...I heard Istanbul was beautiful!

I never felt more safe in Kuwait than any country I have ever traveled to in my life. My hotel had armed guards with machine guns and when you arrived at the front you were stopped, had to pop your trunk and hood, they scaned the underneath of your cars with a mirror. While yes, somewhat daunting...my sense of security was incredible. And to think my mother threatened to lay down on the tarmac and not let me go.

I hope you get to East Africa too someday. I get the sense that your philosophy on travel is a lot like mine...the more exotic and different from your every day life, the better. My next African dream is to go to Uganda and go do silverback gorilla trekking.

Yes I love exoctic spots that most probably would prefer to stay away from, such as Burma.

Istanbul is beautiful, and I really enjoyed it there. If you ever decide to go you should visit the mosques. There is one little hole in the wall mosque, The Eyup Mosque, that I loved.

There was this tiny little church in Florence. I have never felt closer to God and the universe then I did at that very moment. It was truly moving. Florence is where I belong on Earth. Too bad my banking account doesn't agree.

Wupatki National Monument north of Flagstaff, Arizona. Nothing dramatic, just very peaceful and very calming. No traffic noise, no telephone lines, no planes overhead. The only place I went to twice on my trip out there several years ago. I felt compelled to go back just to sit and watch the landscape 'be'.

Machu Pichu has been the most awe inspiring place I have been. There was a spirituality about it that I have never experienced before. Istambul the most beautiful place. Working in an Aboriginal community the most challenging. Palau the best for diving.

Istanbul was awesome, I was only there for 3 days but loved it. I felt safer there than I did in NY! Lol. Also loved Florence, the Duomo was incredible, and the David statue was unbelievable. Well worth the wait in line.

I agree totally. I've worked all round the world and I know that in the countries where people have the fewest material possessions, they are infinitely more hospitable and generous than I am. For the past few years I've been spending several months in Mongolia and have encountered the most competent, hard-working, generous people imaginable. Just wish I could find a life and travel partner to share the delight of working with our global neighbours.
