The Southampton Princess in Bermuda has the most wonderful spa that I've ever been to and I'm planning a trip to go there next October (2009). I'm trying to get together a group of people who would like to come along; I thought maybe we'd get better prices as a group. I've emailed the Southampton Princess but have not received a reply yet.

If anyone is interested in coming along I'd like to know so that I can make the appropriate arrangements.

There's a thread here about the crime rate in Bermuda. When I was there four years ago, I found the people to be some of the most friendly I've ever met. I spent time in and out of resort areas and I never had any trouble with crime. Mind you, I kept my eyes and ears open and just didn't go into areas that "felt" unsafe.

There's crime all over the world. There was a drive by shooting four blocks from my house last week - drug and gang related. Mine is considered to be one of the safest neighborhoods in Edmonton.

You can choose any city on earth and complain about the crime rate.

If we're going to worry about the crime rate in every city, we might as well hole ourselves up in our basements and never go anywhere.

True, some people like to travel outside of the common tourist areas though. I'm sure this is where the crime is happening. Most resorts put a pretty big emphasis on securing their customers.

I happened to stay at a resort when I was in Bermuda, but resorts aren't the best way to get to know a country. They tend to shelter tourists a bit too much sometimes because they don't want us to see the crime. In a way I can understand that because it's part of their job; it would reflect badly on them if all their tourists got robbed or something more serious. There were a few reports last year of Canadians being murdered in Mexican resorts, but this isn't going to stop people from going there.

I like to get out of the resort every now and then to see what the "real" people live like. It gives me a better feel for the culture and I've made some good friends that way.

I think you just need to use common sense if you leave the resort and go into areas that are off the beaten track.
