I've typed this once, but I don't see it. So forgive me if it shows up again.

I have made plans to travel to Italy in 5 yrs. Don't laugh! The way the economy is looking it might be longer, but that is what I'm shooting for.

I'm looking for some kind of contact/pen pal in Italy. I would like to make a friend there so when I do go... I might have someone to hang out with or such.

Does anyone know of anyone or some place I can go to look for a pen pal?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hello SS -

Are you still out there? I hope you are still planning your trip, Italy is amazing! Your headline mentioned Cinque Terre, but no one commented on it. It is so beautiful there, and a great hike between the cities there. I would recomment Rick Steves books, he loves those out-of-the-way places that get you in touch w/ locals. The last time I was in that area was in 2001, it was October.....which makes it just 'out of season'. That's good because of less tourists, but there are less ferries running, less smaller accomodations available, etc. and it's cooler (chilly in the evenings in N Italy), I usually go in September and it is warmer, not too many tourists and still have things open and running. If you are in a metropolitan area such as Rome or Florence most everyone speaks English (esp the young), the other areas it is helpful to know some Italian, but don't let that stop you, Italians LOVE damsels in distress! They are friendly and warm and the food is wonderful. A suggestion might be to learn some Italian froma CD, such as Rosetta Stone, or go to your public library and see what they can get for you. Buena Sera!

Fun fun! I have a few ideas, too.

My favorite way to learn a new language is the Barrons’ series: “Learn [insert language] the Fast and Fun Way”. It is a fun book made for tourists: conversation for the airport, the hotel, the bar, the museum, the pharmacy (good to know how to say certain common ailments in another language), the restaurant, etc.

If you do go to a language class, you may meet some contacts for travel buddies, or potential pen pals.

Another thing you might try is livemocha's website:www.livemocha.com . I just started exploring it. It is a free online language tool/social networking site. Apparently you practice your language skills with native speakers online.

But what other’s have said is true, you will find far more Europeans who have learned English than Americans who speak a foreign language.

My guess is that if you are already planning on going to the Cinque de Terre, is that you are already acquainted with Rick Steve’s travel books? If not, you will find some really great tips about this area in his books. He also has a phrase book just for travel that is pretty good. I used his books for my trip to Austria/Germany and it was great!

I hope you have fun and tell us all about your trip!!!! I love to travel vicariously!

Well you are definetly a planner! Good for you. I've been to Cinque Terre in Italy. It truly is a beautiful place. Learning some Italian is definetly great advice. I went with a tour group so we had it pretty easy in finding places since we had a guide that spoke fluent Italian. It's a good idea to try to get some maps before hand so you know a little bit about the places and how far things are and where you want to go. Also make sure that your accomodations are fairly well located to all the places you want to go or else you'll spend a lot of time trying to find your way to those places.

Good luck!
