Not sure if this is the "best team ever assembled" - but they are looking pretty good.

Nope, the very first USA Dream Team was back in 1992.

For those who don't remember...
[*]G: Magic Johnson[*]G: Michael Jordan[*]F: Larry Bird[*]F: Charles Barkley
[*]C: Patrick Ewing
[*]G: John Stockton[*]G: Clyde Drexler[*]F: Karl Malone[*]F: Scottie Pippen[*]F: Chris Mullen[*]C: David Robinson[*]C/F: Christian Laettner
And a lot of people don't remember that while Laettner was the collegian they took, they COULD have taken a collegiate center out of LSU named "Shaquille O'Neal" - who was a junior at the time if I recall correctly.

It's impossible to stop Jordan 1-on-1 so you have to double him. Who do you leave unguarded so you can double Jordan? Do you leave Larry Bird unguarded behind the 3-point line? Not going to cover Magic Johnson? Leave Karl Malone alone in the paint?

How would you like to d-up Patrick Ewing for 12 minutes then have a fresh David Robinson come off the bench!? Chase Magic Johnson up and down the court, then have a rested John Stockton come in? Getting tired of trying to stop Karl Malone on the wing? Here comes Chris Mullen or Scottie Pippen.

10 of the 12 players on that team are listed on the "Top 50 NBA Players of All Time" list. Their average margin of victory was more than 40 points.

Before the games started a reporter was interviewing Larry Bird and noted that his Boston Celtics teammate Rick Fox was going to be playing for his native Canada. Larry said, with an eye towards the all-star roster he was travelling with, "No offense to Rick but if he's their guy I'm not that worried." I agree with BSchorr. the one and only Dream Team was the 1992 squad. No other team since has come close even come close in ability, name, or reputation. The line up alone struck fear and awe into the basketball world past and present.

Compare that to Beijing 2008, where Spain showed no fear going into the Gold medal game, and stuck it to the USA, only to lose inside the last minute.

Agreed on '92 team being the best. I feel you can only compare how one team does to other teams in that era and the '92 team destroyed all comers. That being said, I think they'd beat this team as well. The US teams of today have gotten away from fundamentals while the Euros have progressed in stregth and athleticism closing the gap.
