OK they have about twice the payroll of any other team. OK they end up in the postseason way too often. OK they've got Alex Rodriguez.

But why? Why are they so hated?

They're playing my Dodgers right now (beat the D's tonight 2-1) and it's a big special event. Why? Really, they're just another team.

'Splain it to me please!

I think the reason is that they are able to afford to buy the players they needed to stay competitive at the trade deadline and thus have a greater chance of winning. Just my interpretation.

The reason is, because they have been on top for so many years, so everyone else wants to knock them off, plain & simple.
And Steinbrenner's approach to owning a team and micro-managing them did not always translate so well, either to the media or any of baseball's fans, in general.

And, sooner or later it happens to every team that has a winning streak.

Being a Red Sox fan it is inherent that I hate them.

It is usually easy to do so because they often have a pretty arrogant group of players.

I can also understand why fans of small market teams would not like them. The payroll is not good for the game as it throws off any kind of normal balance. When one team pays out as much as 8 times the $$$ then there is a clear problem. It usually means that the team can actually field multiple teams in order to compensate for injuries. It also means that the Spankees can absorb mistakes when it comes to highly paid players that just don't work out. They are able to back that up & have a margin for error.

If some teams endure injuries then their season can be done. The Yanks will just grab stars from around the league to replace their fallen stars.

They absolutely should have a salary cap like the other sports do. Now they just have a tax which is not much of a disinsentive.

My team is able to adapt & spend enough to be in a comparable (if not better position) so it doesn't affect me as much.

Don't forget BFC, the Sox do have the second highest payroll in baseball..
at $164 m.
They can afford talent when they want it, too.
(Sox fan here, also.)

Dodgers went from about $125 million last year to $98 million this year. And did very little off-season staffing, including not bolstering the weak pitching staff.

They also raised ticket prices this year by about 33%, concessions by about 25%, etc.

My theory is: the owners are getting a big nasty divorce, are disputing ownership of the team, may get ordered to sell by the divorce judge, and are sucking as much cash as they can out of the franchise.

I hate when stuff like that hamstrings the team.

Anyway ... the Yankee/Dodger series is over; Yankees took it 2-1. Sigh.

People hate them because they're good and have been consistantly good for a long time. Nobody hates a loser. Nobody really cared about the Yankees in the late 80s when they sucked.

Same was true with the 49ers in football. People hated them when Joe Montana and Steve Young were lighting up their favorite team, knocking them out of the playoffs, and winning Super Bowls. But now, they've sucked for a while and nobody cares about them one way or another.

I do think the Red Sox fans are/were a little different. The whole curse of The Bambino and some obnoxious Yankees fans tormenting them just fueled the fire.
