Female knuckleball pitcher Eri Yoshida was signed to a minor league baseball contract with the Chico (California) Outlaws last week.

This puts her on the path to the majors -- the mens' majors. If she makes it, she will be the first female on a major league team. (Although apparently Jackie Mitchell, a 17-year-old female, struck out both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game in the 1930's.)

What do you think of women joining mens' pro sports teams? Can it work?

If a woman can play well enough I'm all for it. In many sports the physical stength and size advantage that men have makes unlikely that women would be able to play at a professional level, but in some sports it might be possible. For example, I think that a woman could theoretically compete on the PGA tour. I'm all for women being able to compete in men's sports, as long as they do so legitimately on the basis of their ability.

It's possible knuckleball pitcher is about the only baseball slot that could be filled by a female who was not extraordinarily big and muscular for a woman.

Knuckleballs are lower velocity, so don't require a high degree of strength. A female-sized hand can hold the baseball the right way for a knuckleball. No one expects much hitting or baserunning out of a pitcher.

The only 2 situations where it could be a problem are where baserunners are supposed to cause collisions:
- she's on first, double play ball gets hit, she's supposed to slide into the 2nd baseman trying to knock him down.
- she's on third, bases are loaded so she has to run, there's a hit, she's running home, there's a throw to home, she's supposed to bash into the catcher trying to knock the ball out of his hand.

But if she were a successful pitcher, no one would care if she couldn't knock down defense players.

I wonder about team dynamics? What about fans, would it increase or decrease ticket sales? Would hitters be inhibited, even subconsciously, from line drives down the middle (at the pitcher)? And of course, the locker room!

And the biggest question ... would the guys have to stop spitting?

It would be fine with some sports - like cricket, but with our full contact sports, she'd end up with broken bones. NRL, for example, can be a very rough sport. I would hate to see removal of the tackles and scrums, because of risk of injury to women. Whether we all agree with it or not, women are seen as being lighter built and not as physically strong as men. I doubt a woman would come out of a flying tackle without sustaining injury. The men are big, heavy, muscly blokes!
