Horses have and always will be a big part of my life. Are there other horse enthusiasts out there?

Haven't met any cowboys in here, but there are some rural folks if you look around long enough.

I'm not an enthusiast per se, but I like watching people who know horses. I like to watch rodeo, and I really like the more specialized events that often aren't part of rodeo.

Particularly cutting and reining horses. What a site, to watch the dance between the horse, rider, and hapless calf. lol

Also, I like watching draft horse team pulling competitions...incredible.

Since we've been talking about the Olympics, I thought I'd bring up something else.

In the summer games, they allow hunter\jumpers. (that's horse jumping, over the fence rails and such for those of you who don't know) What's up with that?

I'm in favor of horsemanship in the olympics, especially in today's world when anything involving horses is a dying art but if you let the hunter jumpers in why not other events?

Realistically, they probably wouldn't allow rodeo because of some animals rights issues, but I think either the hunter jumpers should be removed, or there should be rodeo events that aren't......"cruel".
Essentially everything but the bucking events, and the doggin steers. That still leaves all the roping events, cutting and reigning, and of course the barrels, and thoroughbreds I guess I don't see that happening.

I suppose if you really wanted to split hairs, you could say that roping is mean to the calves, and derby style racing is cruel because wealthy horse owners race horses to hard, when they're too young, and wreck their bone structure, but.....I'm no expert. That still leaves several events that aren't "cruel"

Cutting
Reining
Barrel Racing
Pacers

I guess the last reason would be that not many countries would participate in American style rodeo events, and the hunter jumpers are more widely accepted across the globe, it is an international event. Anyway, I just see a lot more of the "human abilities" showcased in rodeo than in jumping that's all.

Thoughts?

Currently there is stadium jumping, dressage and cross county (a series of jumps set up on a cross county course). These three events commonly go together and are called Three Day Eventing. Reining was added as an exhibition sport, but not as a competitive sport. Who knows why it didn't make it. One could argue any sport involving an animal could be, to some degree, considered "cruel". I've seen calves break legs during calf roping. In reining, horses are pushed harder and harder to run fast and come to a sliding stop, which can be really hard on their hocks and hips. I guess that's part of sports; pushing to the limit. Just look back on the Olympic games, the times get faster and the "tricks" more and more difficult.
