I noticed this news story on CNN and wondered what our football fans would think:

Heat deaths put pressure on football tradition - CNN.com

Are coaches just doing what it takes to build a winning team here, or are they being reckless/negligent in their duty to take care of their players?

Two a days are absolutely necessary. Especially because football is a demanding and physical sport so the player needs to be conditioned. With that said, I really wish more high schools invested in getting actual Athletic Trainers. I believe that will help with a lot of the senseless "pushing" some coaches treat their players to. The AT would be able to act as a liaison between the coach and the player.

I played high school and college football in the Northeast, but the summers there were pretty brutal. Two a days and even three a days were common. It's necessary to have that much practice time to get ready for the season (and for conditioning), but it's really how the practices are run that causes many injuries and deaths.

I do believe that in certain areas of the country (namely, Texas, California and Florida, the powerhouse football states) the coaches are doing whatever it takes to win. At many of these programs if one person drops (even dead), someone is already aching to take his spot. There are a lot of coaches out there like Jon Voigt's character in "Varsity Blues."

I think the two-a-practices might be necessary, but there's a better way to do it. They could hold these practices in early morning and late afternoon when the weather is a little cooler. In the middle of the day, when the heat is greatest, they could condition inside with weight training or running stairs in cooled gyms. Although this is football, these are still kids.

More and more pro-teams are going to the inside stadiums. Why not invest in it for high schoolers too? And all coaches should be trained to look for signs and symptoms of heat strokes. The majority of these kids will not play pro or evn college ball. Why put their lives at risk?

And I will say thisL: that my opinion may be different from men, because whereas a father sees football as right of passage and toughing up a boy, a woman looks at him as the child she carried for nine months.

Yes, it is reckless endangerment, but indoor stadiums for high school football?! How do you propose to pay for this? The purpose of high school is provide an education, not to provide a farm team for the NFL. Maybe you could hit them up for a donation to build one. I can hear them laughing now.

I participated in 2-A days in HS.. the first session was early in the a.m 7-10 while the 2nd 7 til 8:30.. The problem isn't the coaches.. It's the states that restrict practing to certain dates prior to the school starting. So these coaches have to cram all this info into one week! States should allow for more time in the weeks leading up to school.

Booster club. Several of the larger high schools around here are spending millions on new stadiums. They charge and an arm and leg for admission plus anything at the concession stand, and charter buses instead of using city or parish buses. I understand that this would be a lot harder for smaller school, and I'm not even going to say it's practical for the larger ones. (Personally, I think the money should be spent on books and increasing national test scores, but the booster club didn't ask me how to spend their money.)

And I agree that it's not a breeding ground for NFL players, but that's what often happens. And if people are going o do this to these kids, they should at least try to keep them as safe as possible. I don't know where you're located, but in many smaller southern towns, high school football is bigger than pro football.

I don't know what the solution is, but I just feel it has to be something better out there than having these young boys dropping dead on he field.

There must be great variety in this. A coworker's son plays defense, and he had practice every day this summer twice a day except on Sundays. On Saturdays, there was only a morning practice. Each practice was three hours. And if the players missed summer practice, they would be cut from the team. Families couldn't go on vacations, and players who needed to earn money for college, couldn't work summer jobs. The families of these players make all kinds of sacrifices for the sake of their sons playing football. It's insane.

Now, in this particular teams defense, they did have medics at the field, and they have a really nice fieldhouse for the boys to relax in during practices.

This should be interesting.. There are serveral reports coming oout now on the NEW turfs that have been installed in HS/College and Professional fields.. The fields that look like real grass and have pieces on ground up tire in between the blades.. They are saying the tires cause serious health problems!

i agree with you that funds could be spent in other ways but I okay with money being invested into any school programs sports included. I from up north and a big NYY fan.. The money he state spent on building two stadiums for professional teams was ridiculious!
