This question is for Canadians. But since it's mostly Americans who use EH, please tell me the US version of the answer to my question.

I'm a patriotic Canadian who is trying to become a pro athlete. A professional soccer player. Is it a global thing that athletes incomes are unsupported by their country and are unstable at best?

Do athletes only get money once they're already a professional within their sport? Especially in Canada/the US with soccer which is NOT: hockey, baseball, basketball or football.

You can compare your question to musicians, writers, or anyone that in some form does entertain the public. You or theamature (which I know you are not . . . I can imagine the years you have under your belt) have to prove yourself to the commercial industry and the government that will then support you. There are maybe a few every ten years that just walk into the professional sports but they more than likely have financial backing from parents or somewhere else. A comparison to any entertainer can be given . . . a musician does not make the big money until they are signed and even then they have to sell. An actor/tress doesn't make money until the big breakout and even then that is the big movie years down the line.

As to discuss the other sports in Canada Baseball and Basketball? If you aren't in the National League you are more then likely not making the big dollars either. More than likely those players have second jobs. I am a patriotic Canadian as well and Hockey players will make the dollar in Canada. It is part of our life . . . just as football and most sports take centre stage in the United States.

Though I do understand how upsetting it is to not get the recognition for your sport being a player myself. Play for the passion and the rest will follow.

Well, welcome to the world wide acceptance of 'you foot the bill'. I use to rodeo professionally during the rise of both BRO and PBR but before hand, had to scrap and claw a sponsor into a 'known sport'.

So mostly, mate, it comes down to until it's acceptance is marketable, you're on the outskirts trying to make a living by what you love. Best bet is to hone in on local haunts where people know your name. Brush shoulders, shake hands, get your name and sport out there in that crowd. Sports bars are wonders though get sponsor money out of them is like squezzing the prverbial stone, BUT if you raise enough interest as to said sport, the sports bar turning on the next soccer game, bingo! You're in.

For me it was western outlets and anything that I could correlate to my sport; think cowboy hunting, fishing, outdoors, etc. Just by saying soccer, you should hit up the local shoe stores around your area...kindalike Fleet Feet out here in CA that cater to running. Run some 5k/10ks they put on and get your name and asperations out to their patrons. By just running one local 5k/10k with a marketable delivery, you'll see some results.

In the end, to market yourself, just find those points of yoursport and present yourself in a positive aspect ...how with you doing what you love can bring in business. Use imagination and soon you'll find it's much easier than it sounds.

I wish you well on your journey! Why not give off you're name here so when/if you make it, we can all say, 'oh yeah...that canuck asked a quesion once...'

Take care, mate...good luck and follow your dreams.

Yep its a "global thing". Australia has a comparativley small population just bordering on 20million, yet we always rate in the top 5 for Olympic Gold medal tally. Even so the stories abound how the "lesser", tier 2 or tier 3 sportmen/women have to beg/scrap/sell/borrow to pay their way not only to the Olympic Games but even for funding a national and international competition or training.

It's a myth that all Pro's are living comfortably, but unless you're the poster child of your chosen "tier 1 sport" or endorsement company than you, as Bradford commented, can compare yourself to struggling muso's, writers etc

If it's your passion, then keep at it mate
