Well, tomorrow (Sunday, 11/28) marks the beginning of the traditional Christian season of Advent. This is only our family's second year of celebrating/observing Advent....as a child, i was not raised in a household of faith, and as an adult, I mostly belonged to non-denominational-type churches that didn't emphasize much, if ANY, of the historic/traditional church calendar other than Christmas/Easter. A couple years ago, we began attending, and then joined, a more traditional Anglican church (not Episcopalian, tho they follow the same calendar and similar liturgy). I've loved every minute of exploring the depth and richness of these long-standing traditions and history...it has added so much to my life and a deeper richness to my faith in ways I never expected.

Link about Advent here: The Christian Season of Advent

Anyway, I thought it would be a neat topic to see if anyone else celebrates -or used to celebrate- Advent, and what your traditions are or were. :-) which could morph into holiday traditions in general (of any faith) which could also be fun.

I was in a different Catholic church and when I came in I couldn't find the Advent wreath. For a while I wondered if they were not doing it, but as I left found it toward the back over the Holy Water. It felt like something was missing the whole time till I saw it. This is a newer church and the architecture seems much less Catholic than the other churches I am used to attending.

We have a Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar. We put together a different miniature figure each day. Works for us!

I also privately acknowledge December 21, Winter Solstice, the darkest day of the year. It reminds me that dark days are behind me and the future will only get brighter!

We make an Advent wreath at church the first Sunday in Advent, then light the appropriate candles each Sunday. I have a wooden tree with pegs that is used like an Advent calendar, each day of Advent a little wooden ornament gets placed on it. I try to make sure that the sacred outweighs the secular, by things like the choices of Christmas music that we play, putting our Nativity in a place of prominence, & attending church.

My mom died on 12/21, so for me it is the darkest day of the year in a couple of ways.

I actually googled that to see how they might have made Star Wars figures representative of the season.

I do this as well. Indeed, this was the original "real reason for the season". Like most Christian rituals, Advent had it origins in Paganism - specifically, the practice of ancient Germanic tribes gathering evergreen branches, weaving them into wreaths and creating small lighted fires with them. The fires were a symbol of hope in the dark winter days and nights that the light of spring would return soon (which, of course, it always did). As Christianity spread across Europe and sought to stamp out all things Pagan, early Christians adopted this practice to make the converting of the Pagans to the new religion easier. The Yule Log, Christmas trees, Advent wreaths, even most Christmas carols were all adopted from much older pagan traditions.

Many of us still pay homage to the original reason for the season.

Once when the kids were little we had an Advent calender with a piece of chocolate behind a thingy for each day. The kids ate all the candy the first day.

Yep, this is historically accurate indeed! (I have many wiccan/pagan friends... even birthday candles stem from a pagan tradition,LOL). While I am not a pagan (well, maybe according to my ex-inlaws, but not the same way, LOL) I do enjoy hearing of others' faith and traditions (hence, this thread, LOL!)
