If Jesus Christ was walking amongst us today in the flesh would He be Democrat or Republican?

The cultural, ethnic, and economic lines that historically separated Democrats and Republicans are no longer as pronounced as they used to be. It is refreshing to see a shift from voting loyalty based on geography and tradition to one based on facts and results.

People are starting to ask: “What is my political party (ideology) actually doing for me? What kind of future will my political party create for me, my children, and grandchildren? How is it improving our nation and our economy?” I believe this is a very healthy change, even so, I was stumped when asked this simple question: “If Jesus Christ was walking amongst us today in the flesh would He be Democrat or Republican?”

Obviously there is no scripturally based answer to this question but political ideology (Democratic, Republican, Conservative or Liberal) must either align or contradict the wishes of our Creator, right? The answer becomes more elusive when the question is asked differently. If Jesus Christ was walking amongst us in the flesh during the American Civil War would he have been a General for the Confederates or the Union? This question elicited real pause for thought and I found myself wondering what is more profound: the answer or the implications behind the question?

During the American Civil War both sides believed God was their advocate. You’ve read the Bible so you know it would be inaccurate to imply that God is a pacifist opposed to any and all fighting regardless of the purpose. Likewise, today, both Democrats and Republicans rally with God as their banner. Which one is “truly” in error and which one has God on their side? After close examination of the question and deep introspection my personal answer to this dilemma surprised me.

This question has created a storm on discussion boards everywhere. If it has given you pause for thought please put a link to it on your Facebook page or favorite blog. Thanks.

And now let the discussions begin!

Jesus would not vote. He would not care about taxes, the national debt, or how the government spent our money. He would focus on the individual and passage to Heaven. He might speak with religious leaders and remind them that politics/economic policies should be cast out of the Church if he were in the area, but not much else.

Jesus would not be affiliated with a political party as a voter and would never run for office either.

In fact, he'd probably rather die than identify himself as a political leader in the secular world.

I'm curious. What makes you certain He would not be affiliated with a political party and would never run for office? Can you expound on that?

Harnomygirl, I confess I do agree with you. Christ would not participate in our political games. I was just amazed at how quickly you derived that conclusion. I actually had to ponder my response for awhile and I must admit that I am a little ashamed for having to do so.

No doubt everyone with political views feels very strongly about them and identifies closely with them. Being a conservative is not just how I vote it is a part of who I am. This question, however, made me ask why I get so riled up whenever something or someone opposes my ideology. Would Christ get upset or would he seek a mutually beneficial solution? I think the purpose of the question is to help people realize it is time to start working together to find real solutions instead of pointing fingers. Whoever started spreading this question around intended for it to make people think and was quite successful.

Maybe he was smart enough to know that politics and religion don't mix well. A man ahead of his time.

Yes, agreed! ^^^

Although to me he was just a historical figure, and most definitely NOT any type of; lord, savior, son-of-God, etc.

One thing is for sure though (at least from my understanding of his philosophies), he would NOT be a Gadsden Flag waver, as he would be incapable of being that cold, cruel, merciless, and heartless to any living being, especially his fellow humans.

Even though the Gospel writers contradict each other to varying degrees, there is still a basic message of unity in Christ's teachings. It's unlikely that, if Jesus returned today, he'd have any use for the institutions of politics and religion - as these tend to divide people, not unite them. I suspect he'd have little more than scorn for them. It's been said before that, if Jesus returned today, the last thing he'd want to be is a Christian - especially considering how most of the people who claim to follow His teachings behave. Assuming Jesus really did walk the earth and had the wisdom ascribed to Him, He would understand that politics and faith have almost always been a universally bad combination.

It's a pity that more of his followers haven't made that realization.

I would have to agree that based on a reading of Jesus' teachings and personal philosophy, it is unlikely that he would have any interest in our partisan squabbling and power-mongering.

If I had to assign him a party, however, it would be a liberal democrat. Think about it... hippie hair-cut, teaching peace and love, fiercely defending the poor, overturning the tables of the money changers in a rage at their corruption.... sounds like a leftist to me. =)
