I've always been fascinated by the stunningly divergent religions of the human race. I'd like to hear what everyone believes, in brief. Try to answer as many of the following as possible:

Where did the world come from?

How did life come to be as it is?

What is the purpose of life, if any?

Where does right and wrong come from?

Are our lives judged, and if so, by whom and on what essential criteria?

What happens when we die?

Try to be brief and direct, and if possible avoid responding to or arguing with anyone. Just state what YOU believe.

I'll start.

I believe the world came into existence through natural forces. I don't believe any intelligence or force guided these forces, but rather that they sort of naturally settled into a stable, balanced configuration that led to the current state of things.
I believe life emerged through chemical processes of emergence and replication on the young earth about 4 billion years ago, and progressed through evolution and natural selection to the world around us. These processes continue today and will continue as long as life exists. In another 4 billion years if earth life still exists it will resemble humans as much as humans resemble amino acids.
The purpose of life is to live. The matter of the universe has arisen, through emergence and evolution, and attained consciousness of self. We are the eyes of the cosmos, observing ourselves. We are machines of perpetual reproduction. Humans are capable of complex abstract thought and symbolism which gives us the ability to create meaning for our lives through our actions.
Right and wrong come from people and the cultures and institutions that they create. It comes from inside.
Our lives are not judged by anyone. Yet there is still justice. I believe that those who live lives full of hatred, violence, and dishonesty probably have a pretty miserable time of it. Those who fill their lives with love, charity, and honesty likely feel pretty happy and fulfilled.
When we die, I believe that is the end of our brief but intense journey, and we live on in the memories of those we touched, and in the contributions we made to our fellow man.

1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!
2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit!
4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates!
5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!
6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires!
7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all!
8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!
9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years!

OK. Manning up.

ShapeShifter,
Is this a satirical statement or a sincere declaration of faith? If the latter, do you believe that the judeo-christian cannon is in some sense true, but has been distorted and propagandized? Or is the Satan you speak of a symbolic or metaphorical entity? How does a satanist's view of the afterlife and judgment and so forth compare with the modern mainstream conceptions?
It sort of sounds like a mix between hedonism and humanism dressed up in anti-christian symbolism.

Satanists don't worship nor believe in Satan. The name's symbolic. Matthew 12:30, "He that is not with me is against me." From a biblical perspective Satanist--though derogatory--is the logical name for a group that doesn't believe in God. There are parallels to the word "Christian", which once was derogatory too. Satanists mostly only wear Devilish costumes around Halloween when they use their "notoriety" to raise money for charities.

They don't believe there's an afterlife nor judgement, given no compelling reason to believe that such things exist. Seize the day!

Satanism is hedonistic, but one point requires clarification. When most say hedonist, they mean someone who lives their life in search of short-term pleasure--"Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die!". In fact, Satanists (and most hedonists) instead consider what will make them happiest throughout the entire course of their life. Eating a gallon of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream because it tastes really good instead of hitting the gym isn't hedonistic--it's foolish and self-destructive.

Satanists agree with most tenants of humanism, but unlike humanists, Satanists participate in ceremonies and rituals. Note, these rituals involve no belief--they are done for fun and social bonding as many celebrate birthdays (most important), Halloween, Christmas (Santa version), New Years, and Easter (Easter Bunny version).

Satanism doesn't require faith (American Heritage Dictionary--"Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence").

PS - I'm not a Satanist, but it's almost Halloween and it's odd that many people accept witches but gasp when they see satanists.

I confess I find Satanism, Wicca, and Christianity equally baffling... but your post intrigues me.

I wholeheartedly agree that hedonistic lifestyles can be tempered by reason and a long point of view... but I suppose if hedonism is the pursuit of pleasure, than the issue becomes what you define pleasure to be.

What you (and the links you provided) describe seems more like an aesthetic choice of lifestyle than a religion. I would presume a strong overlap with the Goth subculture?
