... how do you conceive of that?

Will you still be "you"? The "you" that has a personality, a history, relationships, beliefs, values, etc.? Or will "you" be something entirely different?

Will you still be an individual of some kind? or will you have merged somehow into something else?

Will you still interact with others in some way?

Will whatever you become be static, or will you continue to evolve?

???

(Please note, this thread is not intended to discuss whether there is life after death or not. It's for people who believe there is. "Is there Life After Death?" would be a perfectly good thread topic ... for another thread. Thank you. )

Clearly, everyone who might've responded to this thread has died and has discovered that, in fact, they aren't able to communicate between the two realities....except me of course.

LOL, AudioDad!

I'm so surprised! I really thought people would be interested in this thread.

I have always been an atheist/secularist but lately exploring Buddhism and find my Concept of Everything shifting. I am interested in how people think about these things. Oh well! ... shuffling off to explore some more ...

Perhaps the people who believe in an afterlife do not feel comfortable analyzing their beliefs so closely?

I'll go! For a long time I didn't know what I believed about an afterlife. I was raised Lutheran and heard the bible version of life after death. As a teen/young adult I read books about near-death experiences and found them fascinating and probably the closest I could come to figuring out what was "after." I still think there is a lot of validity to what is consistently relayed by wide ranging people who have had near death experiences and believe it likely describes what happens just as we pass over.

About 5 years ago both my parents died within a short window. We were quite close and this affected me deeply. A few years ago I had the opportunity to have a brief session with a medium, and I am convinced she was talking with my dad. She relayed things that she could only know through him, and said things to me phrased just as my dad would say them. I had gone into the meeting figuring it would be worth it if only for the entertainment value and came away very, very moved. My dad relayed some healing words to me that finally let me let go and move on in various ways. I have since had a couple other encounters with mediums and have come away with similar experiences. I do believe souls who have passed can communicate in limited ways through people who have the gift of hearing them.

So.... because of these experiences, I believe in an afterlife and that we exist as our soul, retaining our memories, and keeping an eye out for those we cared for here on earth. I believe other souls also exist who watch out for us who we may have never met before but are connected to us in some way. I believe we still have connections after life with others who have also passed, and also with souls who we may encounter in a future life.

I do not believe in a specific heaven or hell, but in a general afterlife. I think if we were troubled souls on earth, we may still be troubled souls in some way after death though possibly more at peace. I believe most people have a benevolent soul, and exist that way after death.

The thought of existing in an afterlife does not cause me any fear, but I do want to hang onto this life here as long as possible as it is precious and full of love, and I do not believe my work in this life is done.

Oh! I forgot about this thread!

Thanks WW. I wonder what the souls in your afterlife are experiencing.

I've come to think that, just like my human brain/eyes can only process a subset of available light, my human brain can only process a subset of reality in general. And that there are things that exist that I cannot conceive of, because of my limitations. I can't see UV, I can't fly, I can't breathe water, and I can't understand full reality.

Hi hermes -- I did not understand your post. Do you mean like positive number X and negative number X add up to zero? Or what? Care to elaborate?
