We are all pretty familiar with the Ten Commandments, right?

1 I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me
2 You shall not make for yourself an idol
3 Do not take the name of the Lord in vain
4 Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
5 Honor your father and mother
6 You shall not kill
7 You shall not commit adultery
8 You shall not steal
9 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
10 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife

My question is how did all this other stuff become sin? For example, there is not a commandment that says “Thy shalt not eat more than you expend in effort” so why is gluttony a sin? There is no commandment that says, “Thy shalt not overindulge in consumption and maketh a fool of yourself,” so why is getting drunk a sin?

Okay, you can argue that anything against God or your body is a sin, but that’s not one of the Commandments either.

What say you?

Thanks for your reply.

Why is the word "SIN" so interesting?

7 You shall not commit adultery and 10 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife

I’m guessing cheating must really upset God for Him to separate these into two Commandments. They seem really similar to me. You wouldn’t ever get to the adultery part if you weren’t coveting your neighbors spouse to begin with. Likewise you wouldn’t ever get 8 You shall not steal if you weren’t coveting your neighbors donkey.

9 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

This Commandment doesn’t say, “Thy shalt not lie,” it says not to bear false witness against your neighbor. How many times in your life have you told someone your neighbor was someplace she wasn’t? Albeit you would have to lie to bear false witness, but that is not what the Commandment is warning against. So how did it get reinterpreted into the present day “thou shalt not lie?”

Wouldn’t you have loved to have seen the original tablet etched by the Hand of God? Although I’m a bit puzzled as to why God gave us these Commandments if He knew they would not be followed. I wonder did God know we “couldn’t” follow them or just that we “wouldn’t?” Subtle as it seems there is a universe of difference!

If you remember, Moses threw the original tablets and broke them, so we shall never know what the original Commandments were.......

Suzie
I do recall something about Moses feeling that we didn't deserve the gift of God's Laws. I wonder if like you said the original tablets really could have helped mankind to live more harmoniously?

The Decalogue is the basis for assessing all sin. One can trace all classes of sins to it if they understand the categories.

Many people wrongly imagine that Christ made the law easier by saying there were only 2 general sins related to Charity which He defines as "Love of God and Love of fellow man (including enemies)". But in fact Christ was just giving the first decalogue commandment (love God) and the least commandment (dignity due others). Jews of the time would have instantly recognized these as the first and last commandments in the 613 Jewish Laws called the Mitzvot. The implication was that these two laws of "Charity" bound up all the others "in between" collectively like book ends. It was a a simple way of knowing what the "right thing to do" (or not do) was. In actuality Christ rose the bar for Christians. Now entertained thoughts of lust were spiritually equivalent to the actual deed.

Observe here that in retrospect of God incarnating Himself in human flesh He becomes also our human neighbor (Jesus often associated Himself with the poor and suffering). So it becomes a Divine Mandate to love God in Spirit and also to recognize Him in the dignity and Christ potential of each of every of our fellow men. One therefor can no longer possibly say they love God separate from also loving one's fellow humans and attempt to divide Charity. It is inconceivable that God could be against the same humanity that loved so much that He irrevocably incarnated Himself as part of as a new race of elevated new Adam (Christ) offspring. As an aside contrast that with tenants of Islam that attempts to essentially reverse this notion to charity to make duty to God separate from humanity 600 years later. But I digress...

Running Long so will complete in the following post...

Continuing from above...

So in essence anything that is an offense to Charity (love of God & Neighbor [with self included])that seeks to pervert or diminishes the dignity of even one's self, or God, or His Family/Church or fellow man or the human race at large is grave sin. This is why sins of sexual impurity and infidelity are so morally reprehensible (Matthew 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.; and Deuteronomy 18:13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God; and Ephesians 5:1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children ).

St.Paul laid the framework for what today we call Capital Sins or The Seven Deadly Sins in his epistle to the Galatians:

Specifically (Galatians 5:19-21) tells us who WILL NOT inherit the Kingdom of God - those who do not repent of: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, "and such like".
The Church over the ensuing years as guided by the Holy Spirit (as Christ promised) reduced all of down to a common set of "vices" that a person must overcome with the help of God's grace so as to replace a vice with its opposite redeeming virtue. This made it easier for the average Christian to focus and participate actively and cooperatively with the life long sanctification process.

DEADLY SINS/VICES and IT's OPPOSITE VIRTUE

Vice Latin Virtue Latin
Lust Luxuria Chastity Castitas
Gluttony Gula Temperance Temperantia
Greed Avaritia Charity Caritas
Sloth Acedia Diligence Industria
Wrath Ira Patience Patientia
Envy Invidia Kindness Humanitas
Pride Superbia Humility Humilitas

Each of these is vices is associated with a principal fallen angel/demon that is believed to be at work in the soul who embraces a particular vice and has not yet overcome it -- with the root sin being Pride (Satan).
