Here's an idea. Who cares what the ten commandments are, or what sin is?

You can reach a moral conclusion rationally without the aid of scripture. Just ask yourself "Will this action harm another human?" And you're pretty good from there.

"Should I drink an excessive amount of alcohol?" Will it shorten your lifespan and cause the grief of loved ones because of early death? Are you just partying with a few friends and it won't likely affect you in the future? Are you competent enough to not drive when intoxicated?

And what about gluttony? Do you maintain a healthy weight and blood pressure? Do you do it too often and will it cause ill health effects? Is it a holiday and are you just celebrating like usual, with a big dinner for you and your family?

A mature, rational human can make these kinds of moral decisions in the blink of an eye. Sin was a concept developed by religion to restrict action and thought. We all "sin" in moderation, but a moral person does not take it too far. We can, in passion, lust for our partners. We can, as humans are apt to do, envy the lives and belongings of others. When we relax and enjoy a day off, is that sloth? Yes, but I doubt relaxing is a bad thing.

I highly doubt it is a religious doctrine that keeps you from sleeping with other mens' wives or killing people. You didn't need to read that in a book to figure out it was wrong. Use your rational mind as a moral compass, not a work of ancient fiction.

"Do not do unto others as you would that they should do unto you. Their tastes may not be the same." -- George Bernard Shaw

The golden rule (as stated above) falls short of most peoples' intuitions of an ideal moral code if it's the only rule used to construct your notion of morality. Consider the masochist--a person who enjoys pain. Or, for that matter, any two people in this world with conflicting sets of values. Consider also a judge passing sentence over a serial killer, or a war criminal who detests another ethnicity through and through.

Another interest aspect to your moral code is that morals only apply when others are around. So, if you found yourself on an island by yourself, you would be doing nothing wrong if you took up a hobby of torturting kittens and puppies. Unless others includes animals. Then you must become vegan, unless you condone cannibalism. God help you if others includes all life and you had to stop eating plants as well.

SIN is 'missing' the mark......... the target'
We 'fall short' of the target. To 'fall' is to fail to achieve what we aim for.

If we do not actually AIM....we do NOT sin.

"Forgive them, for they know NOT what they do"

The 'target' is within us. The Kingdom. We WILL and MUST fall short many many times.

The CENTRE of the target is our 'POINT of balance' Centre=Sentir......to feel.

Heaven is a feeling.............a state of 'being'. Perfect balance.
'Even on all sides'.
HA EVEN.

The 'KINGDOM'= THE KING DAMNED

Shapeshifter, I don't even believe such a thing as 'sin' exists. Nor morals.

Ethics, on the other hand, are a different matter entirely. I was simply making the point that the only wisdom I've ever found in the Bible is the so called 'golden rule'. (with the possible exception of 'turn the other cheek') Like any other catechism these are only applicable to certain situations. That is where reason comes in; deciding when these concepts are appropriate.

Nice reducto ad absurdium argument though.
