Man needs god(s)?

This is interesting.

Let us assume for a moment that there is no God or god(s). The story of creation is just a fable. Adam and Even never existed and the events of the Bible that can be connected to historical fact were simply cloaked in primitive superstition to perpetuate a a myth.

I am going to pose a question to any one who feels enlightened enough to answer. It is a very simple question which I will not need to elaborate because it makes my point crystal clear. Are you ready?

At what point in history was it necessary for mankind to create a God or god(s)? How did primitive man fathom the idea of something greater than himself without external influence?

Assuming that God is a creation of mankind means that the thought or idea of God had to have an origin. Someone had to come up with the idea. I’m no expert on mythology or theology but it has been remarked that there is no real difference between the two, “atheist just believe in one less god than Christians.”

One obvious difference is the number of followers who believe in Christianity versus the plethora of other deities that we know for certain have been created by mankind throughout history. Some could argue that even though Christians all believe in the same God it is liken to having multiple deities because different religions view God and His doctrine very differently. Hence my previous question about how can the God of mercy and love be the same God of Eternal Hell.

What I find fascinating about Christianity is that it uniquely encompasses the entire human experience. The Books of the Bible take the story of mankind from creation to extermination. Whether the Bible truly is the work of the Divine or simply the writings of some very imaginative human beings it is an intriguing and compelling story unlike no other.

No one can select options that exist beyond the reality they are presented with. To do so requires changing our present reality. If there are answers beyond the Bible and science perhaps we are too close to the puzzle to extrapolate them. If understanding preceded experience life couldn’t happen; not having the answers is what produces the illusion of alternatives. Once you know something beyond a shadow of a doubt it forever changes your behavior. Knowing something doesn’t require any effort; believing something does.

If Faith is a concoction of mankind and there are no Deities, Spirits, or supernatural phenomena at what point in history did mankind ascertain the need for these things. How did primitive man go from crafting simple tools for hunting to inventing invisible beings? If mankind “evolved” and was not created, how does mankind’s creation of gods or ”The God” aide us on the journey of our biological evolution?

at some point in our history, man began seeking reasons and explanations of everything. the concept of god(s) likely came about to explain anything that they themselves couldn't explain at that point in time. "we don't know why there's lightning, therefore God!"

i don't think the creation of any god "aids" us from a biological perspective. i think it is part of our "intellectual" evolution. even today, we see there are fewer and fewer christians and religious people overall. when i read the bible objectively i see that a significant portion is the product of the bronze age intellect and cannot be the word of God. as we advance in science and gain understanding of anything previously unknown, the need for god diminishes, i.e. we no longer need the sun gods or lightning gods as we can now provide scientific explanations of their nature and existence.

we really shouldn't "need" God for anything. we can function in society in a civilised manner purely in a secular way. man does have a natural curiosity for the afterlife and it is really unsettling to have to come to terms with the possibility of this being our only existence.

Kierkegaard assessed brilliantly that man's identity is the result of identifying his self with itself and its Creator. Man, apart from his Creator, finds his identity in fleeting objects and pursuits and, consequently, finds a meaning and purpose that fades, which leads to despair (I certainly did not do his eloquence justice). He concludes this, in a way, writing that man, naturally, is burdened by hopelessness and despair.

You can read this in his work, The Sickness Unto Death. The Christian Classics Ethereal Library contains fragments of his work, all of which are tremendously fascinating.
