Thought this article was interesting. A quote:

Fewer than 4 in 10 Americans (38%) believe that earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters are a sign from God, while roughly 3 in 10 believe that God sometimes punishes nations for the sins of some citizens, according to the survey.

What are your own thoughts along these lines?

While my own personal skepticism has been tempered with mustard seed faith that continually grows, I still feel that the more we learn about our natural world, the more the god of the gaps continues to diminish, and the ancient superstitions that try to account for calamities disappear.

I read once where if the entire history of the universe was like a 24-hour day, Man would have arisen at about 11:59:45 PM.

If a natural disaster cannot be verified as an "act of God," does it negate insurance coverage?

Biblical literalists often get themselves in a bind with this one. According to Isaiah 45:7, God is indeed responsible for all evil - or "calamity/disaster", depending on which translation of the Bible one is reading.

This attitude always gets me.

Christians usually attribute bad things that happen to themselves as God testing them or the devil trying to get them.

But when it happens on a larger scale or to someone they dont know its gods judgement or wrath.

Why dont they consider that maybe it's gods test to them to see how much compassion they have?

After all the one they say they follow was constantly moved with compassion.

Although I do believe we live on a planet that is still constantly changing and hopefully we learn more through science how our world is going to change and adjust our lives around it instead of assuming it should adjust itself to us.

could we add teaching the christians to have compassion. If I as a christian never suffered how could i deal with a non believer who is suffering? God may be using these events to get peoples attichion, and they do present a situation where good people, believers or not, show their good ness. Some of the victums bring about their own problems by just plain foolishness, bilding on a flood plain at ground level, on unstable hill sides, to close to the beach, on lava flows, that sort of thing.
