Posted in Christian group, no answers, thought would put here

So an entity has arm's length control over hundreds of trillions of individuals.
Though does not individually control all or any at any particular time, has ability to smite any or all at any given time (and does from time to time).
Directly and indirectly controls what they see / eat / feel.
Directly and indirectly listens to and selectively answers their "prayers"

Does this make (a) "God"?

anyone?

sounds like any of the ancient mythologies with their "gods"

I suppose you didn't get a response in the Christian group because it comes off as mere trolling

does not sound like the God I know and love. Mine is caring and loves me and is verry importan and involved in my life. In the future he will judge every one and does not wish to send any one to hell and made a way for all who are willing to admit there wrong and trust him to spend eturnity with him.

Hi Olneyjeeps, I think what you've defined is a god, but not the God of Creation. I agree with Bob_db, it sounds like any of the ancients' gods, but, again, not The God that we Christians follow. Like acelticsteve said, the God of Creation is very personal and very much involved in our lives. Everything around you He has created with care and thought. He does not smite at whim, He does not give or with-hold on impulse either. God metes out justice, yes, but more than that, He is merciful, patient and forgiving. I think you would be hard pressed to find a god who is anything like Him. The God of Creation wants you to know Him, He wants to have a relationship with you and has provided the way for that to happen. Jesus, His Son, is the way the truth and the life. Thanks

In my opinion, there is no god or gods. Only by relieving yourself of this "faith" can one be truly free to enjoy life.

It's not necessarily just the "ancient" gods being described in the original post. The god of the Old Testament very much fits that description.

Well, your description sounds to me like how many people 'understand' God, as being an Entity which has power should that power be wielded. Sounds like a tyrant and a tyrant is not someone I would define as being God.

Excellent post, Rix!

Dear OlneyJeeps,

We can use attributes such as: Immutable, Sovereign, Omnipotent, Omipresent, Omipowerful, The Great, "I Am Who I Am," and so many more, but indeed, "Who among us can define the Great and Mightly God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?

One of my very favorite Bible passages from Isaiah 40, goes like this:

Who has measured the water in the hollow of His hand, or with the breadth of His hand marked off the heavens?

Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?

Who has undersood the mind of the Lord, or instructed Him as his counselor?

Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten Him, and who taught Him the right way?

Who was it that taught Him knowledge of showed him the path of understanding?

Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; He weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.

. . .

Before Him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by Him as worthless and less than nothing.

To whom, then, will you compare God? What image will you compare Him to?

. . . .

Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.

He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them aways like chaff.

'To whom will you compare Me? Or who is my equal?' says the Holy One.

Life your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, 'My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God'?

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall:

but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40: 17 - 31, Holy Bible, New International Version
