Do you think it's possible to desire to be married but God has not designed that for you? Bible says He'll give the desires of the heart to those who delight in Him. But, at the same time, God is sovereign, so it's His prerogative what he allows and does not allow. What are your thoughts?

I think this is where the Lordship of Christ comes into play. What if He does say "no?" He's absolutely entitled to that. He purchased you, and the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Glorify Him now. You will enjoy Him forever.

I honestly believe that if He has no mate for you here on earth, He Himself will fill your heart with joy and contentment and reassurance of the depth of His own love for you.

Ruth Bell Graham said it so nicely, when she said, "God isn't nearly as concerned with your happiness as He is your holiness." Set yourself aside for His purposes and He will bring you happiness. It just might not be in the form of a spouse.

Have you heard a voice from an invisible man that has told you "no"? This is cause for concern if the answer is yes. Please seek psychiatric help.

I would say, keep your heart open to any possibilities in your life. If you get a spouse great, if not, then that's okay too. But you will not know God's plan until you meet him and ask him yourself. Until then, just follow the right path in your life, and don't turn down any dates in the meantime. God is not a dating show and you should not be waiting for him to set you up...so it is up to you to still maintain an open heart to all possibilities in life.

I absolutely believe this is possible. Every desire we have is not inspired by God. We are only human and we often desire things that are not in our best interest.

The Bible does say that God will give the desires of your heart to those who delight in Him. We have to remember that 'desire' doesn't mean 'our every possible dream of anything we might ever want.' God knows what is best for us and he knows what His plan is even when we don't understand and even when we think we know better.

I think that Divine Will is ineffable. Orthodox theology declares this to be the case.

God says "no" to many things, and as followers of Christ we need to acknowledge that possibility.I like whats someone else wrote about what Ruth Bell Graham, she has said,He is more concerned about our Holiness than our Happiness. And If my Holiness is furthered by being single... then thats okay!!!! (until such time as I know for sure thats what He wants for me,I will seek a Godly Loving relationship)

According to Catholics, there are THREE main callings. One is to religious life (priests, etc). One is to married life. One is to SINGLEHOOD. That is as valid a calling as marriage.

And, personally, I'm quite disappointed by society's attitude that if you aren't married, there must be something wrong with you. I thought modern society was supposed to embrace all choices. Sheesh!

Anyhow, in my cultural roots (Chinese), there is a ceremony for those who choose to remain single. It is as elaborate as a marriage ceremony. Quite fascinating.

As far as the original question about what to do when you hear a call to single life, my answer would be to follow it. It's better to willingly walk the path God lays out for us than to fight it. I believe we are all familiar with the story of Jonah and the whale?

I think God can say no to a marriage, but not just to keep someone away from marriage. But more to keep them away from a relationship that the person would be bad for God's plan for that persons life. However, God also gives us the option not to care what he says and to do what we want.
