What do you think of this?

Pat Robertson says Haiti paying for 'pact to the devil' - CNN.com

Based on media coverage, many people are outraged by these comments.

Do you think these kinds of statements give religion a bad name? Or do you agree with his views on the earthquake in Haiti?

I have not read the full text. That being said, God allowed his son Jesus to die for us. God gave up the judgement thing in the old testament. We are given a free will, and if we accept Jesus, choose God, and follow his will/word, we have a path to salvation.

In answer to your question......YES, these types of statements only make things worse. It puts a bad taste in your mouth where religion is concerned. That is a statement of judgement and no one has the right to judge anyone else. "Judge not lest ye be judged." Matthew 7:1

The next time you have a serious problem or tragedy occur in your life, do you want someone saying to you that you deserved it?

"Silence is golden"...this would have been a good opportunity to practice this age old adage given the fact that there are more pertinent issues in today's world that are contributing to the imbalance of nature and have a more direct correlation to the activity we are experiencing today. To dredge up something so far in Haiti's history makes for such a weak argument that he only succeeded in reinforcing negative stereotypes of religious minded people. We are not responsible for the sins of the father or else we would never have hope or motivation to better ourselves. Reminds me of a Muslim cleric quite a number of years ago who also succeeded in embarrassing himself in much the same way by referencing some obscure historical fact in America's distant past to support his present day argument. It was met with an akwardly long silence afterward on behalf of the media. So I suggest these men orient themselves to the present and keep their arguments current. Let's stop living in the past and try to deal with the present so we can actually make some progress!I'm a history buff and supporter of many things traditional but I don't live in the past, I have too many things going on right now to deal with

I'm not religious, but in this case, no, I think it gives Pat Robertson a bad name, and I've heard that even many Christians are outraged by his comments.

I think the kind of statements that turn people off to religion in general, and Christianity specifically, are those that are more widely held and based on intolerance of numerous groups of people whose only crime is being who they are and/or not interpreting the Bible as they do.

Pat Robertson doesn't speak for religion in general, or for Christianity, or even for conservative Christianity. He shouldn't be giving anyone but himself a bad name.

It makes no sense to decide that one person's silly comment is indicative of ANY group that person belongs too.

It would make as much sense to decide that Pat Robertson has now given a bad name to all men or to all senator's sons or to all Republicans or all authors or all businessmen or all horse racing fans.

His words reflect on himself.

I think Pat Robertson is a bigot and an idiot. He can be relied upon given a microphone to say something stupid. This is but one stupid statement in a long, long list of stupid statements. It is the price we pay for living in a free country. He has the right to be a public idiot. But fortunately we also have the right to turn him off. I do so and recommend that you all do the same. But it is your call to make.
