To me, the reason of the season is love, renewal, happiness and joy. You can celebrate whatever religion you want or none, I don't really care. Just please don't try to convert me by shoving anything in my face. And I also believe the government should stay out religious celebrations completely.

I am not sure why anyone should ever be upset about anyone else wishing them Happy Whatever. To me, that just shows hate and intolerance.

For Christians who have a problem with the words Happy Holidays, what do you think Jesus would respond to someone who said that to him today? I think he would respond "And Happy Holidays to you."

Our theatre company has quite a few staff members and a huge number of patrons who are Jewish, so 'happy holidays' is second nature around here!
They actually allow those of the Jewish faith into The Lone Star State (besides Kinky, of course)?!?!

I learn something new every day!

Christmas is a National Holiday and has been for about 100 years. Let me say that again. Christmas is a National Holiday. It is a legally recognized day. Since our government observes the day as the Birth of Christ, how can having the accouterments of That Day possibly be a violation? It can't be. Which demonstrates our schizophrenic attitude not just toward this season but to religion in general and Christianity in particular.
Well, see there's this thing in our Constitution...it's called the 1st Amendment. There's a specific section of that amendment commonly called the Establishment Clause. You might want to take the time to do a refresher on it. Whether or not Christmas was established as a national holiday by government fiat is utterly irrelevant. It doesn't change the fact the alleged birth of Christ didn't actually happen on December 25th (so what, exactly, are you celebrating again?). It doesn't change the fact that the early Christian church 'borrowed' most of the customs and/or practices of the pagans and called it "Christmas".

If anything is being attacked, it's the original reason for the season.

It is rather ironic that those who decry the alleged erosion of religious freedom are the ones who want to remove the safeguards that protect religious freedom, for all ( freedom of/from religion, and safeguard against the establishment of a state church).

What was that about schizophrenia?

I have not figured out when Christ was born I tink that some of the holiy days of the Jews might hold a clue. I looks to me that it started out for a day for a Cathlic Mass for the Christ Child then took on a life of it's own. the customs that were borrowed may have been used to make moer confortable for people to change to that verson of christanity, not a good reason. This year I put aside all of the arguments, and negativity and enjoyed the season. I did not hear any thing about any one putting rules on weather one should say Marry Christmas or Happy Hoilydays, I had a good time.

Throughout history, new religions have always adopted or borrowed many of the customs and/or practices of older religions in an attempt to smooth over conversions. Early Christianity was no different than the many religions that long predated it in that respect.

You had the right idea. There's really no reason we can't all treat each other with respect and good will at this time of year....or, really, all year long.

Ya, I am starting to feel that a lot of this is petty and like the old Bots sead "don't worry about the 6 thried" or was that "don't sweet the small stuff".
(someone sugested to me that if I could find the dates of the taxation ordered by the Emper we could come close to the date of the birth, it might be fun to look into)

The cattle were lowing is another clue. I heard years ago that that was actually in spring.
Never checked it out.
Although I kinda wish it was in Feb because I think it is most longest most boring month there is. And it sure would be nice to see the lights with the snow then.
