Because most Americans identify themselves as Christians, and most Christians do not accept the Book of Mormon.
Yet, many Americans also wrap the Bible in the flag in the call to go to war. However, the events in the Bible are centered in the Middle East, and it is primarily Semitic in origin. While the alleged events in The Book of Mormon (although problematic as far as archaeological evidence), are centered here on the American continent. Therefore, can one come up with a more truly "American religion?"

But many biblical events are problematic as far as archaeological evidence as well. I was just reading some of that a few months ago.

How about my friend who is a member of a Virginia native tribe and follows some of their practices. (She's also the one that gave me my Native American name!)

"So the question is really: has anyone else out here spoken with missionaries...of any stripe...and what was your reaction to their coming round? Were you insulted? Irritated? Curious?"

I try to figure people out. I talk to anyone who is religious about their faith to find out what their faith really is; I was conversing with Mormans and Jehovah Wtnesses around the same time and figure they are in kahoots! Revelation 12 talks of a woman in the Tribulation who gets two great wings. I believe they beleive the woman is the Mormans and the two great wings are the Jehovah Witnesses. During the Trib they "will remember" who to help and who not to help. I treat them nice but would like to know if this is their philosophy.
As a person that was raised a JW, I can assure you that JW's most definitely do not subscribe to this view of themselves. ..I have never heard of this.

I would seriously doubt that Mormans and Jehovah's Witnesses were in collusion. Even though I am neither, I have friends who are members of both denominations and I spend a lot of time in "Mormon Country". They definitely do not see eye to eye.
You are correct Chawks!

JW's, Mormon's, and Seventh Day Adventist's "definitely do not see eye to eye" on many key biblical issues....based on varying interpretations of the scriptures and use of different bibles.

Native American religion...now, that's a hard one to argue with as the original "American" religion, DofA!! And welcome back. Haven't seen you in ages!

rix....I take your point, but truly, I don't think most Americans think about how "American" their church is or isn't. It's got a flag up front and in many cases their family has always gone there; and if they like the people, the music, and the pastor (or at least 2 out of the 3...lol), that's good enough for them.

Hi, Grace! I had to stop after an accident in the late winter/early spring. I'm not disfigured or deformed, but it kept me on the couch for a while, then I had to catch up on lessons for a dance comp. Then I got too involved in my writing, and I now try to avoid the computer. Glad to hear about the planned wedding (or did I read an old update on that?)!

I think it's a little in the other way. People think, "One nation, under God," and assume this country was founded by Christians, therefore is a Christian nation, therefore it has favor with God and therefore we should be patriotic as part of our religion. These are the people that have no idea how many Deists were involved with the founding of the country or some of Jefferson's comments about religions.

So it's not about how American one's religion is, but how religious America SHOULD be (by their point of view) because they believe his is a Christian nation.

I was being facetious. The point I was trying to make is that many Americans hold a Bible in one hand, and a flag in the other to justify certain actions as being both "godly" and "patriotic." And DOA is right; what would truly be a more authentic "American religion" than Native American spirituality. The problem is we already dealt the indigenious people of this land a great injustice in the name of destiny, and in the name of God. I also realize that certain aspects of the Bible are questionable, and I was avoiding opening that can of worms. I was targeting easier prey when addressing The book of Mormon.

I agree...I guess that is why JW's do not join the military nor do they allow themselves to be drafted.
